SEATTLE (Oil Monster):According to the most recent Natural Gas Monthly Report released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), U.S. natural gas consumption reached new monthly records for the winter and summer months of January and July of 2024. In 2024, the average amount of natural gas consumed was a record 90.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). There was a little 1% increase in total consumption in 2024 compared to 2023.
In January 2024, there was a 12% increase in natural gas usage compared to January 2023. Comparing July 2024 to July 2023, there was a 3% increase in consumption.
The weather has a major influence on the patterns of natural gas usage. Due to rising demand for space heating in both the residential and commercial sectors, winter natural gas consumption in the United States often peaks in January and February. The increased demand for air cooling causes the summertime natural gas consumption to peak in July and August.
The consumption peaked in January of 2024, and because of the mild weather, levels decreased from February to April. Every month from May to September saw consumption levels surpass those of the prior year.
The combined annual natural gas consumption by residential and commercial sectors registered 2% year-on-year decline in 2024, EIA report said.
