SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Ghana has inaugurated a natural gas-powered combined-cycle power plant in the industrial zone of Kpone. The plant, with an initial capacity of 200 MW, was officially inaugurated by the country’s President Nana Akufo-Addo in a ceremony held on November 19, 2024. The facility is considered as one of the major components of the Ghana Bridge Power Project (GBPP).

The plant is equipped with cutting-edge cloud-based management systems and contemporary heat recovery technologies. Six turbines power the plant's first phase. By 2029, a second phase of construction for a 315 MW power plant is anticipated.
In recent years, the nation's thermal energy industry has faced numerous difficulties. Due mostly to problems with natural gas sources, the actual availability has lagged far behind the installed capacity. Ghana formed GBPP, a joint venture between Andaris Energy and Endeavor Energy, to address these issues. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will purchase the plant's entire output under a 25-year contract.
By the way, since 2022, natural gas has made up 63% of Ghana's energy mix. The GBPP is probably going to have a significant impact on the nation's energy independence.
