In 1973, Tony Yates started a welding and propane delivery business on Nantucket. For 30 years, Tony Yates Welding & Gas Service grew and changed the complexion of Nantucket’s residential and commercial energy practices.  In 2005 Yates Gas was acquired by Liberty Propane, based out of Kansas, which was then acquired by Inergy L.P in 2010. In 2012, Inergy L.P. was acquired by Suburban Propane of Whippany, New Jersey, one of the country's largest propane retailers.  In 2013, members of the Yates family, in partnership with Island Energy Services the owner/operator of Nantucket's Harbor Fuel Oil Co. and Airport Gas Station Inc. started Island Gas, Inc. Island Gas quickly earned itself a reputation as a responsive and dependable propane and propane services provider.  In April of 2016, Island Energy Services acquired Yates Gas. In summer of 2019, Yates Gas and Island Gas were consolidated into Yates Island Gas.  Under one roof again, and still employing many of the original Yates Welding & Gas Service employees, Yates Island Gas is solely focused on and committed to Nantucket and its energy requirements. Yates Island Gas understands the unique, challenging, and wonderful environment that is Nantucket and is committed to providing the Nantucket community energy solutions for both today, tomorrow, and generations to come.
