Our History

Xcel Energys roots go back more than 100 years through its three predecessor companies. Both Northern States Power and Southwestern Public Service Company began serving customers in the early 1890s, followed by the Public Service Company of Colorado in the early 1920s. Public Service Company of Colorado and Southwestern Public Service Company joined in 1997 to become New Century Energies, and merged with Northern States Power in 2000 to form Xcel Energy.

Were a national leader in renewable energy. Today, almost 30 percent of your electricity comes from renewable sources. We invest in renewable energy to ensure we deliver clean energy while maintaining reliability and keeping bills low.   By 2022, more than 75% of the energy you depend on will come from clean energy sources—wind, solar, and nuclear—while keeping bills below the national average. By 2030, our vision is to provide 85% carbon-free energy for all customers in the Upper Midwest. By 2050, we aim to provide zero-carbon electricity to all customers.  Our industry-leading renewable energy programs—including the nations largest community solar program—give our customers cleaner energy options and more control over their energy use.
