To put it in the simplest terms, the Wyoming Municipal Power Agency (WMPA) is the wholesale electricity provider for 8 public power communities in Wyoming. Cody, Powell, Lusk, Lingle, Guernsey, Fort Laramie, Wheatland, and Pine Bluffs are all full members of WMPA.
WMPA's generation capacity comes from it's ownership share of the Missouri Basin Power Project and Dry Fork Station. In addition, WMPA also has agreements in place to purchase federal hydropower.
In addition, the 8 member communities are joined by the remaining public power communities of Wyoming who are our Associate Members: Torrington, Gillette, and Deaver. Although the associate members do not receive power from WMPA, they do enjoy representation in WMPA’s public relations and legislative efforts.
All totaled, WMPA truly represents the public power interests of Wyoming, and public power ultimately serves 20-25% of the state’s population.
WMPA is always ready and able to serve as a source of information to Wyoming’s elected officials, consumers, or those with general interest in the electric utility industry or public power. Please let WMPA serve as your source of information in these areas as well.
WMPA owns 1.37% of Laramie River Station, which was completed in the early 1980's. WMPA receives approximately 23 MW of capacity and 175 million kilowatt hours per year of energy from LRS. WMPA is one of six partners in the Missouri Basin Power Projectthat includes 3- 570 MW Generating Units at Laramie River Station, the 104,000 acre-ft Grayrocks Dam and reservoir, and 500+ miles of EHV transmission. For more information please reference Basin Electric's website.
WMPA owns 7.1% of Dry Fork Station, which became commercial on November 1, 2011. WMPA receives about 29 MW of capacity and 221 million kilowatt hours per year of energy from DFS. Dry Fork Station is a 405 MW, air cooled, mine-mouth generating facility with state of the art environmental controls. For more information please reference Basin Electric's website or download the Welcome to Dry Fork Station brochure.
In addition, the Agency is a contractor for Federal Hydropower from the Loveland Area Projects and the Colorado River Storage Project. When all of these resources are scheduled to meet our member loads, it provides economic, environmentally responsible, and reliable electricity to eight cities and towns in Wyoming!
