For almost 70 years, Valley Proteins, Inc. has been a leader in providing an invaluable service to global economies and the environment. Through our core competencies in rendering and recycling, Valley Proteins sets the standard in creating valuable products from renewable resources.

  • Our focus has always been on customer service. Our foodservice, meat processing and supermarket customers rely on us to provide prompt, reliable collection and recycling services directly tailored to their needs.
  • Our clean and efficient plants utilize advanced continuous rendering processes that result in advanced production methods, less energy consumption and better products.
  • Made from the freshest ingredients, we produce sustainable high-protein, high-energy feed ingredients that nourish our global food supply.
  • Our strong commitment to a sustainable future leads us in the development of biofuel ingredients produced from recycled restaurant used cooking oil (UCO) and animal fats.

Making a Sustainable Difference

For three generations, Valley Proteins, Inc. has been a leader in providing an invaluable service to global economies and the environment. Through our core competencies in the recovery, rendering and recycling of animal processing, supermarket and foodservice waste streams, Valley Proteins sets the standard in creating renewable resources for the development of quality animal and pet feed ingredients.

Contributing to a Cleaner Environment

At Valley Proteins, our business is based on the collection and recycling of animal processing waste from the food industry that would otherwise lead to environmental contamination. We provide prompt disposal services to restaurants, supermarkets, slaughterhouses and poultry processing facilities throughout the mid-Atlantic, eastern and southwestern United States. Our clean and efficient conversion plants recycle these waste streams (fat and bone trimmings; waste cooking oils; meat/poultry waste) into safe, high-energy feed fat and protein-rich meal products. These value-added sustainable ingredients provide the nutrients feed producers need to create high-quality animal feeds.

Renewable Energy Solutions

Our strong commitment to a sustainable future leads Valley Proteins to produce renewable energy alternatives. Our biofuels have proven to be a reliable energy source in our own plants and in the production of renewable diesel and biodiesel.

It Started with the Man in the Porkpie Hat

Clyde Smith  In 1949, Clyde A. Smith started a business that would fulfill a dream for three generations. Over the next 60 years, Valley Proteins, Inc. would grow to become one of the largest rendering companies in the United States. Through multiple acquisitions, expansion into global markets and investments into the development of biofuels, the Smith family enterprise has flourished, and remains true to the legacy set forth by their grandfather’s vision.

Setting the Standard in Advanced Rendering Technology

For almost 70 years, Valley Proteins, Inc. has set the standard in advanced continuous rendering technology. With our state-of-the-art processing facilities, strict quality control policies and innovative staff of research technologists, Valley Proteins is always on the leading edge in the conversion of animal processing and supermarket waste streams into value-added feed ingredients and clean energy alternatives. We continually strive to create innovative solutions that enhance our processes, providing our customers with superior products at competitive prices.  Since our inception, Valley Proteins has continually invested in the improvement of our operations. From our facilities, to our trucking fleet, we have invested millions in capital expenditures resulting in improved production methods, process control, energy consumption, quality control, and ultimately, better products. Typically, we allocate at least 5% of our sales annually for the improvement of our operations.

Continuous Rendering Processing

Valley Proteins utilizes proven continuous rendering processes throughout all of our plants. Our operations continually feed raw materials through a series of cookers, conveyors and presses resulting in a continuous outflow of quality finished product. This process allows us to implement round-the-clock operations, maximizing energy efficiencies with minimal downtime.  Our third-party certifications ensure compliance with all Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules. All Valley Proteins locations carry American Protein Producers Industry (APPI) and/or American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) Safe Feed/Safe Food™ designations.

Sustainability – the Fundamental Nature of Our Business

As a rendering company, the fundamental nature of our business is recycling and sustainability. We are committed to protecting our environment through the proper recycling of animal processing and supermarket animal waste (fat and bone trimmings), and restaurant used cooking oil (UCO) that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills or municipal wastewater systems.  100% of the animal processing and supermarket waste stream and UCO we collect is recycled at one of our licensed facilities and converted into safe, nutritious, renewable, value-added products. We use these raw materials to produce high-quality animal feed ingredients and renewable biofuels.

Leader in Clean Renewable Energy

Produced from the valuable animal processing waste stream and used fats, oils and grease (FOG) we collect and recycle in our rendering facilities, Valley Proteins, Inc. is a major contributor in the manufacture and use of biodiesel feed stock and biofuel (for boilers). With the plant capacity and infrastructure of our efficient conversion facilities already in place, and the quantity and quality of raw materials we acquire from our suppliers, Valley Proteins possesses the capabilities to easily produce biodiesel feed stock and boiler fuel that meet or exceed the quality standards specified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM D 6751).

Pure Renewable Diesel/Biodiesel for Clean Energy

Valley Proteins’ sustainable biodiesel feed stock is produced from the animal fats and FOG we collect and recycle in our conversion facilities. Our fats are used to produce 100% biodiesel, and biodiesel/diesel blends, for use in diesel engine systems. Our biodiesel feed stock meets the quality standards specified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM D 6751) for use in diesel engines, and has passed the testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act amendments.

Biofuels – the Clean Boiler Fuel Alternative

  • Valley Proteins biofuel for industrial boilers is a scientifically-proven alternative for heating oils and natural gas. Produced from the animal fats and FOG we collect from suppliers, our biofuel can provide an economical alternative energy source for use in industrial boilers. In fact, our own plants have been utilizing biofuel as heating fuel for over 15 years, confirming that animal fat is a viable, and often economical, option for heating and emissions concerns. And, just like traditional heating oil, Valley Proteins will deliver our biofuel directly to your facility.
  • Used alone, or as an additive, our biofuel has been proven to reduce sulfur emissions for cleaner air. Created from our renewable raw materials, these biofuels not only contribute to a cleaner environment and our local economies, but also help decrease our dependency on foreign oil.
  • In a boiler room, the transition from No. 6 residual oil to biofuel is seamless – no alterations to the heating system are needed. Our clean-burning boiler fuel is completely interchangeable with No. 6 fuel oil. A clean insulated, heated tank (10,000 capacity) with a float level indicator is required. To begin burning animal fat, simply burn down the existing No. 6 fuel in the tank and add clean animal fat – changeover can occur immediately without boiler shutdown. To keep the heating system running smoothly, it is recommended that a duplex filter be installed in the oil supply line between the fuel storage tank and boiler to avoid any unnecessary downtime.
  • With proper changes to boiler configurations, Valley Proteins’ biofuel is also a reliable alternative to No. 2 residual oil and natural gas. To make the conversion, the boiler needs to be set up as if it will be burning No. 6 oil. This generally includes the installation of an oil heater, air pump and atomizer, oil return line, filter, metering valves, nozzle and related components. As with the conversion from No. 6 oil, a duplex filter keeps the system running smoothly.
  • Boiler fuel can be mixed with heating oil to produce a blend, or delivered directly into No. 6 fuel oil tanks without disrupting plant operations or creating additional maintenance. Typically, boiler fuel is produced in a variety of blends – 20% biofuel is considered acceptable for use in existing furnaces without modification.
