In 1946, Lee D. McMahan started the McMahan Poultry Company. In the early 1950s, he acquired a used oil truck to deliver fuel to his own poultry houses. Soon thereafter, he started delivering fuel to neighboring poultry farmers who wanted the benefit of oil delivery. Tri Gas & Oil was officially incorporated in 1963, delivering heating oil around the Eastern Shore.  At the time of incorporation, Tri Gas & Oil primarily offered propane gas and heating oil delivery to commercial customers. As our business grew, we expanded our offerings to include residential customers, and also added to our product lines. We began offering custom oil blends, biodiesel, and a range of other cutting edge and environmentally friendly products—perfect for the Delmarva agriculture industry, as well as homes and businesses.

What is propane?

Propane, also called Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG or LP), is a gas that is compressed and stored as a liquid. It is one of the cleanest and least complex hydrocarbons in existence. It is non-toxic, colorless and virtually odorless (the pungent skunk-like aroma you smell is an additive to keep you safe!). It has numerous uses inside and outside your home and is a clean, abundant energy source.

Why should I use propane?

• Affordable. On average, propane costs about half as much per BTU as electricity.
• Reliable. You can still have heat, hot water, and hot food during electricity outages even—in the worst of weather conditions.
• Warmer. Compared to electric heat, a propane heating system is, on average, 20 degrees warmer (approximately 91,000 BTUs).
• Readily Available. Propane is convenient and portable, and can be used virtually anywhere, whether you are in the country or the city.
• Easier maintenance. Propane-fueled furnaces last between 5 and 10 years longer than electric heat pumps, on average.
• Clean & Environmentally Friendly. Propane is non-toxic and insoluble in water, so you don’t have to worry about a risk to soil and ground water supplies. It’s released as a gas, so it doesn’t spill, pool, or leave a residue.

A Great Choice With Automatic Delivery, we take on the responsibility of monitoring your fuel usage and keeping your tank from running out. You’ll have peace of mind knowing that we are monitoring your usage and delivering fuel when you need it. No more checking the tank gauge or sticking your oil tank. We forecast your fuel demand based on your usage, appliances, weather, and more to ensure that we’re delivering fuel to your tank in time. And, the best part is … Automatic Delivery is available at NO EXTRA CHARGE!

Will Call Delivery

While we recommend Automatic Delivery, some customers prefer or require Will Call delivery. With Will Call delivery, it is the customer’s obligation to keep track of their fuel levels and call for a delivery accordingly.  We recommend that our customers contact us (either via the Online Account or telephone) when their tank is at 30% for propane or one-quarter (1/4) for oil. This allows sufficient time for us to schedule and route a delivery. Calling at less than 30% for propane or one-quarter (1/4) for oil puts you at risk of running out if delivery times are estimated at longer than our standard 3 business day delivery window (due to weather conditions, peak seasonal demand, or unforeseen circumstances). If you run out of fuel, your system may require a restart, which will incur an additional charge. We encourage you to be vigilant to notice the extraordinary changes in conditions such as a cold snap.
