Mission & Vision

Our mission is to contribute to clean, sustainable and predictable energy. Tocardo is fully aware of the huge challenge our world is facing in replacing the need for fossil fuels in the coming decades. Tidal and river energy are among the key sources of renewable energy available on our planet. Tocardo is harvesting this energy and working to provide clean and sustainable energy for future generations.

We aim to do this on a commercial basis and want to become a leader in the tidal energy market. To achieve this we have chosen a sensible strategy: start small and upscale to big offshore tidal turbines. Smaller turbines are much easier and cheaper to install in the starting phase of the tidal market. Commercializing these “scaled” turbines will generate a track record and income and will enable us to develop big offshore turbines.

The key to our success lies in the reliability and affordability of our technology. 

We believe in doing business in a responsible way. We implemented a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy in 2012 to define this responsibility. By doing so we are one of the first producers of tidal turbines with a CSR policy. The policy is available in the media section of the website.

History

The Tocardo concept was developed by Teamwork Technology, an incubator for renewable concepts such as energy, transport and housing. Different concepts, from a venture to a ring generator, have been developed but proved to be too expensive and unreliable. Instead of focusing on efficiency the decision was made to focus on reliability and affordability. The offshore experience and knowledge within the company resulted in the installation of the first Tocardo test turbine in 2005, followed by the installation of a commercial turbine in 2008.

Tocardo became an independent company in 2008 and has been fully commercial since 2012 when the first turbines were sold to clients in Nepal and Japan. With the investment of Huisman, Tocardo is ready to become a leader in the tidal energy market.

The technology

Tocardo’s range of water turbines provides cost-competitive, reliable and predictable electricity. Our strong focus on simplicity, minimized maintenance requirements and maximized power generation has resulted in a scalable, proven technology that has been grid connected for more than four years.

The turbines consist of a permanent magnet direct drive generator and a patented bi-directional reversible rotor blades design, developed, manufactured and installed in close cooperation with major industry partners.
