Terrestrial Energy brought together leading minds in business and technology to quickly commercialize a far superior nuclear technology — one that harnesses nuclear energy’s enormous potential to deliver reliable, cost-competitive and clean energy, developing a nuclear fission technology that will transform how the world’s energy is produced. The most promising technology to meet the world’s energy needs, a technology that is proven and demonstrated, was selected from many candidates — and Terrestrial Energy went to work to integrate a series of unique innovations to create the Integral Molten Salt Reactor, or IMSR®. The IMSR® uses a liquid nuclear fuel, a molten salt, a truly innovative approach. It will generate 195 megawatts of electricity per unit. Two IMSR® power plants can power a city the size of Denver. IMSR® power plants will deliver reliable and clean heat and power. They will be easier to build and finance, less expensive and more versatile than today’s conventional nuclear technologies. Terrestrial Energy is engaging with world-leading advisors, industrial partners and nuclear regulators. The first commercial IMSR® power plant is expected to come online in North America in the 2020s. With Terrestrial Energy’s industrial partners, hundreds of IMSR® power plants can be deployed.
Nuclear Is Clean Energy
The life cycle emissions of greenhouse gases from nuclear power plants are among the lowest of all energy sources – IMSR® nuclear plants are virtually emission-free on a life cycle basis. IMSR® power plants use energy from uranium fission, which is 10 million times more energy dense than fossil fuels. IMSR® power plants have among the lowest environmental impacts of clean energy technologies today. The IMSR® is a transformative energy technology. It is a cost-competitive clean energy alternative that can produce heat and power without greenhouse gases at great scale, and in the time necessary to achieve 2050 environmental targets.
Nuclear Is Sustainable
With current extraction methods and reactor uses, uranium resources will last centuries. Future evolution of IMSR® technology could include use of spent nuclear fuel, “breeding” fuel cycles, and even thorium. With these iterations, IMSR® nuclear power becomes near-infinitely sustainable as an energy resource, one that can meet the majority of global energy needs for many centuries.
