Southeastern belongs to an alliance of more than 750 Touchstone Energy cooperatives in 46 states. Touchstone Energy provides a  unified face for the small business that own and service rural America's 2.5 million miles of power line. By working jointly, this network of small co-ops generate services that would normally require the resources of a national corporation. 

Touchstone Energy co-ops are owned by the members they serve and are comitted to providing reliable electricity at the lowest price possible. In short, co-ops "look out" for the members they serve.

Meet the Board of Directors

As a Member of Southeastern, you have control of decisions that are made at your cooperative through your board of directors. The Board meets monthly to review the operations of your Cooperative.  Southeastern's directors are elected by the members at the annual meeting held each year in June.

Headquartered in Bismarck, ND, Basin Electric supplies 65% of your electricity. Basin coal-fired plants rank among the nation's cleanest and lowest cost coal plants.

Federal Hydropower

Six federal hydro-electric plants on the Missouri River provide 22% of your electricity. The Western Area Power Administration markets this renewable energy.

Wind Energy

13% of your electricity comes from wind-powered generators from the Chamberlain, Crow Lake, Day County, and Hyde County, wind farms. They provide enough energy to power 25,000 homes. Southeastern members are part of this "GREEN" project.

Transmission

East River Electric Power Cooperative

Headquartered in Madison, SD, East River delivers wholesale power to 25 member systems, including Southeastern, through a 2,500 mile transmission system.

Southeastern delivers retail electricity to over 15,000 members with 4,092 miles of power line. Southeastern Electric's 55 employees promise to deliver reliable, high quality electricity along with prompt, friendly service to you - our members and owners.

Cooperative Principles

Principle #1: Voluntary and Open Membership
Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, open to all people able to use its services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.
 
Principle #2: Democratic Member Control 
Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members—those who buy the goods or use the services of the cooperative—who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions. 

Principle #3: Member's Economic Participation 
Members contribute equally to, and democratically control, the capital of the cooperative. This benefits members in proportion to the business they conduct with the cooperative rather than on the capital invested. 

Principle #4: Autonomy and Independence
Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members. If the co-op enters into agreements with other organizations or raises capital from external sources, it is done so based on terms that ensure democratic control by the members and maintains the cooperative’s autonomy.  

Principle #5: Education, Training, and Information 
Cooperatives provide education and training for members, elected representatives, managers and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their cooperative. Members also inform the general public about the nature and benefits of cooperatives. 

Principle #6: Cooperation Among Cooperatives 
Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.

Principle #7: Concern for Community
While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of communities through policies and programs accepted by the members.
