On June 7th, 1916 Ole Rud, along with brothers Paul and Carl began operations of the Standard Oil (Now Amoco) bulk station in New Salem. On that day the three Rud brothers were equipped with wagons and horses to haul gas, oil and grease to any and every one having a use for it. They handled over 25 cars of gas and oil during their first year of operation.  In 1918 the Ruds decided it was time to “pasture out” their horses and modernize their operations. They purchased an International truck, the first one sold west of the Missouri River, and started rolling their merchandise on rubber.

Henry Rud, son of Ole, began with the firm in 1932. With the retirement of the three Rud brothers, Henry took over operations. His two sons Sheldon and Curtis came on board in the following years. Curtis ran the operations in New Salem and on October 9th, 1967 Sheldon Rud started Rud Oil Co. of Center. The Turtle Lake division was acquired in 1994.  As of May 2002 Rud Oil began handling Tesoro product as Tesoro purchased the Mandan Refinery from Amoco.
