More than 70 million tons of asphalt waste are generated annually in the US. We believe that waste asphalt can be re-used to produce fuel oil for further processing. We have invented a patented cold-water process for recycling waste asphalt produced on the highways, tennis courts and residential driveways into fuel oil and clean aggregate using our bioremediation product VaporRemed. The clean aggregate remaining at the end of the process is free from asphalt binder or bitumen and can be classified as ‘clean fill’. Both the fuel and clean aggregate can be sources of revenue according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The asphalt pavement industry reclaims more than 60 million tons of asphalt pavement material each year during road widening and resurfacing projects, and nearly all of that material is reused. Incorporating reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) into new pavements reduces demands for fresh asphalt binder. This helps to keep costs down as well as improving the environmental footprint of projects. However, there are scenarios where such reuse is not viable for a project requiring disposing of the RAP safely as RAP is not considered as “clean fill” by FHWA and needs to meet the local county or state solid-waste disposal requirements.
