Company History
Petroleum Management Services Inc. was founded by Bob Wass in 1991. Bob started in the hazardous waste industry, working for an oil reclamation company and later doing projects in the environmental field. In 1991, he opened the doors to Petroleum Management Services Inc. Petroleum Management Services began in a small office in Ipswich, MA with 3 employees, his partner and 2 trucks. After time, he found it difficult to meet the needs of his clients from so far away. In 1992 Bob moved the company to its current headquarters in Wakefield, MA. In 2001, Petroleum Management’s sister company, Lighthouse Environmental Solutions, a fully licensed and insured hazardous waste transporter, was created. Lighthouse provides services driven by our clients’ needs, and has proved to be an asset to the company and to the community. Having been in business over 20 years, Petroleum Management Services Inc.’s survival and growth in a very competitive field is based on attention to client and employee needs. After 20 years Petroleum Management Services Inc. has grown. Primary services provided in 1991 were oil tank removal and installation, but have expanded significantly. We now offer over 30 different services to the Greater Boston area as well as New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
Fuel Analysis and Filtering Systems
Fuel analysis was first used after World War II as a preventative measure by the United States Railroad to monitor the condition of its train’s engines and engine components. It proved to be a vital tool in maintaining the locomotives. Through extensive analysis of used oils, the practice found small engine problems could be contained. The key tool in this research was the use of the spectrometer, an instrument that identifies properties using light. A tool that is still used today. In modern practice, fuel analysis also includes the testing of oil additives. Additives are added to fuel oil for enhancement purposes. Examples of additives include; detergents, rust inhibitors, viscosity modifiers and anti-foaming agents. We can reduce your maintenance costs using fuel analysis to determine the life span of your oil and its additives. Some of the methods we use for our fuel analysis are as follows; spectral exam, insoluble test, viscosity test, and a flash point test.
Residential Oil Tank Installation & Removal
If you’ve spent a winter in New England, then you know how cold and raw the weather can be. When that cold weather hits, having a fuel storage that is ready for immediate use is extremely important. We offer both aboveground and underground tank installation and services. Our trained technicians will install an aboveground tank in your basement, outdoors or in a tank enclosure. Whether you are replacing an old tank with a new one, installing a new tank in your new home or having one removed due to a conversion, we have you covered. We adhere to all requirements provided by the National Fire Protection Association as well as local Fire Prevention. This includes oil line protection for the fuel lines and anti-leak devices. During the removal process, we meet all state and local codes and pump out all remaining fuel and sludge in your tank. The oil lines and vent pipes will be removed and the openings where pipes were located and sealed, if a new tank is not being installed.
Tank Monitoring Services
UST A/B Tank Inspections
A class A operator may be the owner/operator, an employee or a contractor with general knowledge and understanding of the UST system for which s/he is designated the operator. A class B Operator may be the owner/operator, an employee or a contractor with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the UST system(s) for which s/he is designated the operator, and how to operate and maintain the system(s), as well as the federal and state regulatory requirements that apply to the system(s). Just like the Third Party Inspections, A/B Inspections are required by state and federal regulations to all underground regulated tanks. A/B inspections are performed monthly and inspect all areas of the tank from the fittings, piping and vents to the overspill / overfill protection systems, and monitoring system components. We make detailed records of each monthly inspection and while these inspections are not required to be filed with the state, the owner of the tank must keep record of each A/B inspection to remain in compliance. Another responsibility we have as A/B Operators, is to train your class C operator. We will train your operator on the components of your tank(s), proper emergency procedures and response to alarms at the facility. As a class C operator, the responsibility of overseeing tank function is a 24/7 job. But with our oversight, should there ever been a problem, we are a phone call away.
