As a locally managed, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company, PacifiCorp is a leading western U.S. energy services provider and the largest grid owner/operator in the West. Serving 1.8 million customers across 143,000 square miles in six western states, we will continue to grow our renewable resources and transition to a lower carbon future. PacifiCorp is comprised of two business units: Pacific Power (www.pacificpower.net), headquartered in Portland, Ore., serves customers in Oregon, Washington and California; and Rocky Mountain Power (www.rockymountainpower.net), headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah serves customers in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.
The largest grid operator in the western United States, we serve the growing energy needs of 1.9 million customers while protecting the environment. Our business units are leaders in providing safe, reliable and sustainable low-cost power. We own 10,880 megawatts of generation capacity from a diverse mix of hydro, wind, natural gas, coal, solar and geothermal resources. Our Integrated Resource Plan is our 20-year roadmap for meeting customers energy needs with reliable, least-cost electric service.
Wind and solar
Our pioneering commitment to renewable energy began in the early 1980s with a demonstration wind project on the southern Oregon coast, followed by an experimental utility-scale wind project in Wyoming in the 1990s. Renewable generation from company-owned and contracted solar and wind facilities represent an important and growing segment of our resource mix. Through our Energy Vision 2020 initiative, were significantly expanding the amount of wind power serving customers by 2020 and "repowering" our existing wind resources.
Hydro
PacifiCorp owns 41 hydropower facilities, located in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Utah and Montana. With a total generating capacity of 1,135 megawatts (MW) of electricity, our hydro resources power households and businesses across the West. The lands and water along these facilities also provide recreational opportunities for visitors to enjoy, and support thriving wildlife habitats.
Hydroelectric facilities
Hydroelectric projects generally operate under licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). A hydroelectric license includes terms and conditions for project operations, as well as environmental protection, mitigation and enhancement measures to mitigate project impacts on the surrounding environment and natural resources.
Thermal
PacifiCorp operates 17 thermal electric facilities that generate electricity from coal, natural gas or geothermal resources. Thermal plants are located in Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Montana. PacifiCorps power plants use specialized equipment to control environmental emissions and comply with all state and federal requirements.
Energy Imbalance Market
PacifiCorp and the California Independent System Operator launched the Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) in November 2014. The EIM uses a sophisticated system to automatically balance demand every five minutes with the lowest cost energy available across the combined grid. By connecting utilities and leveraging diverse renewable resources across the West, the EIM is dramatically lowering greenhouse gas emissions and helping to unlock the full potential of a low-cost, reliable and resilient energy system.
Connecting communities across the West
PacifiCorp owns and operates one of the largest privately held transmission systems in the nation. With over 16,500 line miles of high-voltage transmission spanning 10 states and a range of climate zones, were uniquely able to serve our customers with the diverse and abundant natural resources the West can offer.
