One of the ways we live our environmental, economic, and community commitments is in the mix of resources we use to generate electricity. Our mix is diverse, low cost, reliable, and increasingly clean. It ensures affordable electricity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Our 2017-2031 resource plan targets more than 30 percent of our electricity coming from renewable resources by 2021. Just over 50 percent will come from fossil-fuel resources that we own. They’re low cost, in excellent condition, and meet all environmental standards. And they have the 24/7 availability that keeps the physics of the power grid intact.
We’ve made a commitment to balance. Because the environmental and operational profiles for the resources that generate electricity aren’t all equal, we’re proud to live our commitment, in part, through our mix of energy resources.
Our three main energy goals are reliability, affordability, and environmental responsibility. We’re glad to help our customers achieve these goals with our industry-leading energy-efficiency and load-control programs. These programs save our customers money and reduce the need to build more resources.
Our generation mix includes coal-fired plants, hydroelectric plants, wind power, solar power, and combustion turbines. We also purchase electricity from the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) energy market when buying it is cheaper than producing it.
