Northeast Biodiesel, LLC is a biofuel manufacturing plant committed to producing high quality renewable fuel in a sustainable way. Its majority owner, Co-op Power, is a sustainable energy cooperative owned by consumers in New England and New York, primarily in Massachusetts. Biodiesel is the only fuel alternative to fossil fuels for moving school buses, trucks and tractors. It can be used easily in any diesel engine or oil heat system without modification. It can be blended with regular diesel, but many diesel systems can use 100% biodiesel! It runs cleaner than petroleum diesel fuel and, with our recycled oil feedstock, it has a lifecycle greenhouse gas emission profile showing an 86% reduction in climate-warming emissions over diesel and gasoline (per page 476 of this EPA report). Northeast Biodiesel is producing 1.75 million gallons of recycled vegetable oil biodiesel with an expansion to 3.5 million within a year. Were an engine for local economic development across the Northeast. We invested $3.5 million in the facility. 14 staff operate the plant. Indirect jobs supported by the plant will include construction and facility maintenance, people picking up recycled oil from local restaurants, biofuel blended home heating oil delivery, and trucking to bring in our recycled oil and other raw materials and to distribute our finished product. The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) partnered with Northeast Biodiesel to provide critical funding and assistance under the Massachusetts Renewable Thermal Business Investment Financing Program, which was designed to provide financial support for businesses seeking to establish or expand distribution, manufacturing or marketing of renewable thermal technologies or supply chain infrastructure. The partnership was funded through Alternative Compliance Payment (ACP) funds, which are made by electricity suppliers that do not meet their statutory Renewable Portfolio Standard obligation to purchase a sufficient percentage of renewable energy. The DOER develops and implements policies and programs aimed at ensuring the adequacy, security, diversity, and cost-effectiveness of the Commonwealths energy supply to create a clean, affordable, and resilient energy future. DOER is an agency of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
