Our History
"THATs the deal. TAKE it or LEAVE it!" demanded J. Greg Merrion in as diplomatic a fashion as he could muster. He was trying to peddle a San Juan Basin Gallup-Dakota prospect on family-owned minerals in the late 1950s. Well... they left it. But what J. Greg lacked in diplomacy, he more than made up for in moxie. So, after nine years as a petroleum engineer wth the British American Oil Producing Company, he set out on his own in 1960. Risking it all, he quit his job, moved his young family from Midland, TX to Farmington, NM, then begged, borrowed, and scraped together enough money to drill the Edna 1 (a Gallup oil well named after his mother). The successful well beat back the creditors, and was the "big bang" that began the evolution from J. Gregs dream into the company that would become Merrion Oil & Gas.
In the early years, J. Greg partnered with fellow independent Bob Bayless, and with a little spit, grit, and a string of hits, they survived the vicious cycles of the industry and built up their company. In addition to drilling shallow development wells in northwest New Mexicos San Juan Basin, Merrion and Bayless purchased producing wells in the San Juan Basin and in fields in Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, and Utah.
As the second generation entered the fray, the succesful duo decided to amicably part ways. In 1992, J. Greg officially laid down his slide ruler and handed the reigns over to his eldest son, T. Greg. J. Greg continued to serve as Senior Advisor until his death in 2002. T. Greg has served as President and Chairman of the Board since 1992.
