About Company

Our business was started on Main Street in 1928 and moved around the corner to 19 W. King Street in 1929 where we stayed for 83 years. On August 15th 2013 we moved to 1266 N. Franklin St., Chambersburg to combine the office and truck storage in one central location. What does this mean to you?? Hopefully you will find our consistent and stable service to be a pleasant change from todays trend of "recordings" and "voicemail".

History

Over 86 years ago Garnet and Bruce McCleary started in the home heating business. In those days keeping customers warm meant carrying buckets of oil from the truck to the tank 5 gallons at a time.  As times have changed so did our customers needs. Therefore McCleary Oil Co. positioned itself as a dependable source of home heating products with a local storage facility for HEATING OIL and PROPANE. In addition, the biggest asset we can provide our customers is a staff of experienced individuals who refer to customers by names, not account numbers.

Combining an unparalleled history in the heating oil industry with propane sales and service, McCleary oil Co. continues to support our mission statement: Provide our customers a trouble free, economical heating source, in a courteous, professional and convenient manner.  We take great pride in the long term relationships we have with our customers, many dating 30+ years. We are located in the same place where Bruce and Garnet started the business. With the third generation involved, we continue the same personal service that only a small family-operated business can provide. And that means courteous, dependable deliveries to you the customer.  McCleary Oil Co. is sincerely interested in your business. Our customers benefit with automatic deliveries, payment plans, and 24-hour emergency delivery. Call our offices today and let us take the worry out of your heating needs.

Heating Fuels

For 79 years we have provided quality heating fuels for the Franklin County area. During those years other local retailers have gone out of business, changed their names, or been bought out, however through all the changes McCleary Oil Co., Inc. has continued to be a stable source of heating fuels.  We have a dependable and secure supply of products as well as a dedicated group of employees that allows us to provide heating fuels to our customers.

Propane

Propane (LP) is a liquefied petroleum gas that comers out of both oil and natural gas wells. Propane does not occur naturally though.  Raw crude oil or raw natural gas is refined to make different types of petroleum products, one of which is propane. Following its refinement, propane is stored as a liquid under pressure until utilized, at which point it becomes a gas. Additional information can be found at www.usepropane.com.  Propane has many uses in addition to home heating such as cooking, hot water, clothes drying, fireplace, outdoor fireplace, generators, and more.

Tank Installation

There are many options for storing propane at your home. Unlike heating oil tanks, propane must be stored outdoors. Tank sizes range from 23 gallons to 2,000 gallons for most home applications. Tank size is based on the specific demand of the home. Tanks can be installed aboveground or underground. Underground propane tanks do not have any environmental concerns, and with proper protection can last 40-50 years. We can provide the tanks as well as the piping from the tank to your appliance.  Which is the best product for your application? The fuel product that would suit your specific needs can vary. Heating oil has the most BTUs(measure of heat units) of heat compared to propane, however propane has the flexibility of providing other options such as a fireplace, cooking, clothes drying, outdoor grill, back-up generator, and lighting. Give us a call and we will be glad to discuss which product fits your specific needs.

24-Hour Gas

McCleary Oil Co., Inc. has A 24 hour Gasoline and Diesel fuel site at 484 West Commerce Street in Chambersburg.  Cards are available in our office to use at this sight. Three grades of gasoline, On road diesel, as well as Off Road diesel and heating oil are available 24 hours a day. Statements are mailed out at the beginning of each month detailing each purchase. Payment is due within 10 days of mailing of statement. State law does not allow credit card transactions at "unmanned" sites therfore the system cannot accept any card other than McCleary Oil cards.

Automatic Delivery

Fuel deliveries are made automatically based on a specific use. Whole house heating, hot water usage, supplemental heat, and periodic usage are different types of automatic delivery. Regardless of the type of schedule used, the purpose of automatic delivery is to provide uninterrupted supply of product to the customer.  The most common automatic delivery is for customers using fuel as there heating source. This type of delivery is based on a method called Degree days. A degree day is based on the difference between the high and the low temperature for the day. Calculations determine the “number of degree days” and combined with a “K factor”(unique to your home based on your heating habits) this determines when a delivery is needed. The “Degree Day system is very accurate as long as there is consistency within your heating system .

Call In Delivery

Call-in accounts are just as they sound. A customer notifies our office when a delivery is needed. The order is placed to allow two to three days for the delivery to take place.  Heating oil and Kerosene customers should call when the tank is at the 1/4 to 3/8 remaining mark. This level will allow enough product for several days and also will hold the minimum delivery of 150 gallons. The standard size fuel tank is 275 gallons. Generally when empty, a tank will hold 250 gallons.  Customers that use propane for supplemental heat such as space heaters or fireplaces are asked to call for an order when there is 20% remaining in their tank. The federal code requires a leak check be performed any time a tank runs out of propane. This will ensure the system is in safe working order. If the tank is empty a delivery will need to be made when someone is home so that the leak check can be performed. There is a charge of $39.00 for the leak check. To avoid the inconvenience of being home and the fee, please keep an eye on your fuel level.
