Solar panels, which are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells, capture the sun’s rays and transforms light photons into electricity.
The PV cells are made up of silicon, semiconductor materials which absorb the sunlight. Usually consisting of two or more layers, one layer has a positive charge and the other a negative charge. Photons from the sunlight are dispersed by the semiconductor material releasing electrons from the cell’s negative layer. These electrons flow through an external circuit and back thought the positive layer which then produces an electric current.
PV cells are usually strung together to increase the power output and sealed in a module, or solar panel, that is weatherproof. Panels are grouped together and wired in series to achieve the desired system power output.
An inverter converts the DC power generated by the solar panel into AC power which can then be used, stored or fed into the grid. Since solar panels are self-contained and modular, installation is trouble-free and mounting can be directly on a roof-top (angled or horizontal) or supported on a ground stand.
