Knapp Energy is now part of Crystal Flash, an employee owned energy company. Knapp Energy has been serving southwest Michigan for over 60 years. Because we call this area home, we dont consider our customers to be accounts, we think of them as neighbors. That means doing all the extra little things without being asked. And always being there when were needed.

Steve Nederhoed founded Knapp Energy in 1954 as Nederhoed Oil Company before his son-in-law, Bob Knapp, purchased the company in 1984 and changed the name to Knapp Oil Co. Knapps son, Dave, has run the company since his fathers retirement in 1999.

Confidence comes with the territory.

In September of 2017 Dave Knapp looking to start a new chapter in his life, sold Knapp Energy to Crystal Flash an employee owned energy company based in South West Michigan. Dave chose Crystal Flash as a successor that most closely mirrored the business ethics and values of Knapp Energy. A major factor in Daves decision was Crystal Flashs willingness to keep the business intact by continuing with the same Knapp Energy employees to support the same high quality products and services the Knapp Energy customers have enjoyed over the past 60+ years.

In the past 55 years or so, Knapp has grown from a small one-truck operation in Kalamazoo, MI to a regional supplier of propane, heating oil, diesel fuel, gasoline and over 800 industrial lubricants.

As southwest Michigans most complete energy source, we deliver the energy services that keep homes warm, industry productive, transportation rolling, and agriculture growing.

Most importantly, over the years weve never strayed from our core principles of giving back to our community, and being thought of as a dependable neighbor.

From the beginning, people first.

In 1954, Steve Nederhoed started Nederhoed Oil Company in Kalamazoo. In 1957, Steves son-in-law, Bob Knapp joined the company. Throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s the company grew and added commercial accounts and lubricants to the mix. Steve loved the business and his customers, but poor health slowed him down and eventually led to his passing in 1988.

energy servicesWhile Steve was frequently away, Bob ran the business, and in 1984, he bought it and changed the name to Knapp Oil Company. He and his son Dave continued to operate the business as Steve did; by treating their customers well and always putting them first.

The 1990s saw the company continue to expand. With the company doing well and having spent 40-plus years in the oil business, Bob decided it was time to retire at the end of 1999. Today, Dave continues to run the company. Bob does, however, still stop in the office when hes in town to give Dave sound advice (sometimes he even waits until hes asked).

In 2001, Knapp Oil became Knapp Energy to better reflect the wide range of products and energy services now offered. Today, Knapp Energy provides propane, fuel oil, premium diesel fuel, gasoline, and a large inventory of lubricants to customers all over southwestern Michigan.

Since the business was started more than 50 years ago, there have been many changes. One thing that will never change is Knapp Energys commitment to quality energy services and its customers. It was the key to the companys early success and remains the key focus today.

DIESEL FUEL

Knapp Energy offers a variety of diesel fuels to meet your needs. Deliveries can be made to storage tanks or directly to equipment. On-Road, Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel In the past few years, Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel has become the predominant fuel in the United States. ULSD has only 15 ppm sulfur content and therefore its use should improve air quality over time. The clear or light color indicates the fuel is taxable for on-road use. Off-Road, Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel Off-road Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel is recommended for use in most heavy equipment and unlicensed vehicles that do not travel on the roadways. The dark red or pink color signifies it is not taxable. Premium Diesel Fuel, On- or Off-Road Premium Diesel Fuel is a special fuel formulation, which has starting and cold weather additives. It is highly recommended from October through March.
