HyperSolar, Inc. is a public company trading on the Over-the-Counter market (the OTC). The stock symbol for HyperSolar is HYSR
HyperSolar is developing a breakthrough, low cost technology to make renewable hydrogen using sunlight and any source of water, including seawater and wastewater. Unlike hydrocarbon fuels, such as oil, coal and natural gas, where carbon dioxide and other contaminants are released into the atmosphere when used, hydrogen fuel usage produces pure water as the only byproduct. By optimizing the science of water electrolysis at the nano-level, our low cost nanoparticles mimic photosynthesis to efficiently use sunlight to separate hydrogen from water, to produce environmentally friendly renewable hydrogen. Using our low cost method to produce renewable hydrogen, we intend to enable a world of distributed hydrogen production for renewable electricity and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
HyperSolar’s innovative technology is based on an integrated photoelectrochemical water-splitting device, where solar-converted electrons are maximally transferred to hydrogen chemical bonds.
Gen 1 technology combines a readily available commercial solar cell and proprietary protective coatings and catalysts into a low-cost self-contained hydrogen generating photoelectrochemical cell. An array of these inexpensive triple-junction amorphous silicon cells (TJ a-Si) are integrated into a panel filled with water that safely releases oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen is captured, pressurized and stored.
Still being developed, our proprietary and highly-efficient nanoparticle technology is built from the ground up to systematically lower the cost of each component.
The nanoparticle, structured as an autonomous nano-solar cell with catalysts, splits water into oxygen and hydrogen. Billions of the nano-solar cells are encapsulated in an array inside a square centimeter protective layer. The technology is designed to be manufactured using a low cost industrial roll-to-roll electrodeposition process. After cells are deposited and coated in the electrodeposition process on a metal substrate, the substrate is inserted into our proprietary solar hydrogen panel design. We have protected this process with patents in the US, Europe, Australia and China with pending grants in other countries.
Today, 80% of the hydrogen we produce is for three main industries: refineries, ammonia production or metal processing. Over 95% of the hydrogen produced is made from a fossil fuel, primarily natural gas, through a process called steam reforming, which emits harmful carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Clean renewable hydrogen must be the goal. The growth of the hydrogen market and the realization of a “hydrogen economy” will be driven by its ability to be converted into electric energy by fuel cells for transportation, power for homes and businesses, and any practical use of electricity. According to the Hydrogen Council, a conglomerate of energy, transportation, and industry leading companies, the demand for hydrogen could increase tenfold by 2050-from 8EJ in 2015 to almost 80 EJ in 2050 driving the market to over a trillion US dollars.
California and Japan are leading the way for a hydrogen vision with thousands of cars, trucks, and homes being powered by hydrogen fuel cells. There are already thousands of fuel cell vehicles (FCV’s) on the road manufactured by Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Mercedes, and others. California leads the way with over 6,000 FCV’s on the road with the goal of over 1,000,000 FCV’s and 1000 stations by 2030. Japan has set forth a strategy to power 30% of its homes by deploying 5.3 million home fuel cells by 2030. The independence from the electric grid these fuel cells provide moves Japan towards a self-sustaining energy future. HyperSolar, producing economical renewable hydrogen at or near the point of distribution will play a major part as the vision becomes a reality.
