Hydro-Québec produces, transmits and distributes electricity. It mainly operates renewable energies, more particularly hydroelectricity. She also does research in energy-related fields and is actively interested in energy efficiency. In addition, it develops the technologies resulting from its research. Its sole shareholder is the Government of Quebec. By law, the producer supplies the distributor with an annual volume of heritage pool electricity, beyond which the distributor obtains supplies on the markets in a context of free competition. Transport and distribution activities are regulated. The company has four divisions: Hydro-Québec Production Hydro-Québec Production produces electricity and sells it on wholesale markets in Quebec and outside Quebec. Hydro-Quebec TransÉnergie Hydro-Quebec TransÉnergie operates the largest electricity transmission network in North America for the benefit of its customers in and outside Quebec. Hydro-Québec Distribution Hydro-Québec Distribution provides Quebecers with a reliable supply of energy. Beyond the annual volume of heritage pool electricity supplied by Hydro-Québec Production, it obtains its supplies from the markets. It works to ensure that its customers make efficient use of electricity. Hydro-Québec Equipment and the Société d'Énergie de la Baie James, a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, are the prime contractors for the construction projects of Hydro-Québec Production and Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie.
