We generate, transmit and distribute electricity. Customer satisfaction is at the very heart of our concerns and we are strong proponents of energy efficiency. Our electricity, clean and renewable, helps combat climate change while promoting a greener, stronger economy.
Our mission and activities
Do you have electricity? Mission accomplished! Each and every day, we do our best to provide you with a safe, reliable supply of clean, renewable energy.
Our logo says it all
The circle symbolizes the sun, which powers the water cycle and keeps our turbines turning! The lightning bolt symbolizes the power of electricity and transforms the circle into the letter “Q” for Québec. Our mission is to deliver reliable electric power and high-quality services. By developing clean, renewable energy sources, we make a strong contribution to Québec’s collective wealth and play a central role in the emergence of a low-carbon economy. As recognized leaders in hydropower and large transmission systems, we export clean, renewable power and leverage our expertise and innovations within Québec and around the world.
Generation
We operate some 60 hydroelectric generating station, making us one of the largest hydroelectricity producers in the world. Close to 100% of our electricity is generated using water, Québec hydropower is a generating option with very low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and no toxic waste. This clean energy is delivered to our customers across Québec and our export markets.
Transmission
Hydro-Québec’s transmission system is the most extensive in North America: over 34,000 km of high-voltage lines running from large generating stations in remote areas to the province’s more populated areas. Supported by towers, these lines transport staggering quantities of electricity. Destination? Communities all over Québec and our export markets!
Distribution
We deliver electricity through our distribution lines, which crisscross the province. Did you know that our transmission and distribution lines extend for some 260,000 km? That’s more than six times the Earth’s circumference (approximately 40,000 km)! We’ve made it our mission to deliver a safe, reliable power supply and offer outstanding customer service.
Equipment and innovation
We harness our know-how and expertise to optimize for today and build for tomorrow. We also fine-tune technological innovations that set the benchmark for electricity providers worldwide: safe battery materials, energy storage systems, electrical powertrain systems, network maintenance robots and more.
Our energy is clean and renewable
Québec has vast hydraulic resources in the form of some 500,000 lakes and 4,500 rivers. This wealth offers immense hydroelectric potential: a collective asset we have been able to harness over time. Hydropower is the ideal means of meeting the major challenges facing North America in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring a secure electricity supply.
Hydropower is renewed through the natural water cycle
Hydropower starts with energy from the sun. The sun’s heat causes water to evaporate and rise into the atmosphere, where it condenses and turns into clouds that are blown about by the wind. When the droplets and ice crystals that form clouds become too heavy, they fall back onto the ground as rain or snow. The water then flows through the rivers, and generating stations harness this cycle to produce electricity.
Québec hydropower is a generating option with very low greenhouse gas emissions and no toxic waste In 2015, the electricity produced in Québec accounted for 32% of Canada’s total power generated from all sources, but was responsible for only 1% of GHG emissions linked to electric utilities. Overall, GHG emissions from Québec hydropower (run-of-river generating stations and generating stations with reservoirs) are similar to those from wind, five times lower than those from photovoltaic solar, 50 times lower than those from natural gas-fired plants and 70 times lower than those from coal-fired plants.
