Established in 1974, Hatfield Consultants provides high-quality environmental services for private and public sector clients throughout the world, including North and South America, Asia, Europe and Africa. Hatfield provides services in the areas of aquatic ecology, environmental assessment and monitoring, contaminant monitoring, GIS and remote sensing, environmental information systems, biodiversity assessments and international development.
Within Canada, Hatfield provides environmental services for industrial clients in the pulp and paper, mining, oil and gas, and transportation sectors, as well as for public sector and First Nations clients. Internationally, Hatfield works closely with international development agencies, multi-lateral funding agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs), and industrial partners.
In Canada, our head office is in North Vancouver. We have company offices in Rossland, Fort McMurray and Calgary (Canada), Indonesia and Laos (Asia) and Botswana (Africa), and maintain business partners in Thailand and Chile.
We are particularly active in Western Canada, Indonesia, and throughout Southeast Asia.
We specialize in undertaking complex, multi-disciplinary environmental projects, often in collaboration with networks of local experts and specialists in particular fields. Our work centers on providing cost-effective, sustainable solutions to our clients’ environmental needs.
Mission
“Hatfield provides innovative, science-based solutions that address the environmental and natural resource management needs of our clients.
We work collaboratively and respectfully with clients and partner organizations, and support the professional goals and development
of our employees.”
Hatfield’s commitment to corporate and ethical responsibility was recognized in the 2007 Canadian Awards for International Cooperation where Hatfield was presented with the Nexen Award for Excellence in Corporate Social and Ethical Responsibility. This award, presented by the Canadian International Development Agency and Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, recognizes Hatfield’s integration of social and ethical considerations into business practices.
In 2000, Hatfield received the Mark-Drake Award in Recognition of Excellence in Communicating Private Sector Contributions to International Cooperation Issues. Hatfield was recognized for its important work addressing the residual environmental impacts of Agent Orange herbicide used during the Viet Nam War.
Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility
At Hatfield Consultants, sustainability and ethics influence all our operations. Since 1974, our commitment to conducting business with a social conscience has garnered widespread recognition, earning us the Mark Drake Award in Recognition of Excellence in Communicating Private Sector Contributions to International Cooperation Issues in 2000 and the Nexen Award for Excellent in Corporate Social and Ethical Responsibility in 2007.
While honesty, respect, and integrity are fundamental to our work, we go further to engage in sustainable activities that have a positive impact on the environment and the communities we serve.
Sustainable Activities
Along with providing environmental services that are sustainable and socially conscious, Hatfield Consultants promotes ethical responsibility on a daily basis:
Our work facilities encourage conservation, offering filtered drinking water, recycling bins, and geothermal heating in our BOMA BESt Level 2 sustainable head office.
Our offices provide bicycle storage and shower facilities to support cycling as a healthy, emission-free option for commuting; North Vancouver staff have participated in Bike to Work Week since 2007.
Staff in North Vancouver regularly volunteer their time to assist in the cleanup of Mackay Creek — an important waterway in the community.
We offer paid time off for staff to volunteer with causes they feel passionate about.
Workplace events raise funds for charity, with recent proceeds going to UNICEF, Haiti Relief Fund, and the Harvest Project, among others.
International Assistance
Hatfield’s global operations also affords our staff with opportunities to make positive contributions in countries around the world. For nearly four decades, our environmental specialists and geomatics technicians have volunteered their time and expertise to important social causes in the developing world, such as assisting with studies on Agent Orange contamination and locating unexploded landmines in Southeast Asia.
Likewise, our international presence has allowed us to help in times of crisis. During the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia, Hatfield Consultants contributed on-the-ground assistance, satellite imagery, and mapping support to aid relief efforts — using our specific expertise to help those in need.
Corporate Social Responsibility Committee
Hatfield Consultants’ dedication to ethics has only strengthened in recent years, with the creation of our Corporate Social Responsibility Committee. Comprised of staff from all levels of the organization, the committee ensures that Hatfield Consultants is taking appropriate steps to improve our environment and our communities, both in Canada and around the world.
Quality Management
At Hatfield Consultants, our reputation is built on unflinching commitment to quality. From the design of our projects to our day-to-day operations, we uphold superior standards to ensure our clients receive the best environmental services possible.
This dedication led us to seek ISO9001 certification in 2008. Certification not only satisfies requirements for our industrial clients, but proves that we maintain exceptional standards of service and strive for constant improvement, whether archiving documents or collecting water samples.
ISO standards also form the base of Hatfield’s quality management plan, which features guidelines for business operations and detailed instructions for field procedures. Each year, we submit this plan to third-party audits — a process that ensures our services always meet the high expectations of our clients.
Paired with our decades of hands-on experience, ISO9001 certification has also given us a strong knowledge of ISO14001 — the standard for environmental management. As a result, we are able to apply international standards while serving as environmental managers, as showcased during our work on the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement and the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement projects in Vancouver’s Lower Mainland.
Health and Safety
Hatfield Consultants is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment, both in the office and in the field. Since operations began in 1974, Hatfield has maintained an outstanding health and safety record, embracing guidelines that often improve upon standards set by government and industry. By incorporating the following principles into our daily activities, we enhance the security and well-being of our team, our clients, and our partners in the community.
Leadership: Our management leads by example, keeping up-to-date with health and safety practices while striving for constant improvement.
Training: All staff – office workers and field technicians alike – receive and maintain current training in effective health and safety procedures.
Guidelines: Based on government legislation, industry standards, and decades of experience, Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan guides employees in staying safe and healthy on the job, whether writing reports or conducting field surveys.
Equipment: Equipment and vehicles receive regular maintenance to ensure they operate at peak safety levels and to prevent injuries.
Design: Hatfield project managers design work plans with safety in mind, requiring daily hazard inspections at field sites and preparing control measures to reduce risk.
Reporting: All workers report incidents and near-misses to their supervisors, who work with the health and safety coordinator to track and measure data to improve our processes.
Review: Hatfield’s Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee regularly reviews and investigates matters related to safety at Hatfield Consultants, recommending improvements to our equipment, procedures, and training methods.
Communication: All workers, supervisors, and employers contribute to an ongoing discussion about safety protocols and potential risks, collaborating on appropriate actions for safer work conditions.
Certification: Since 2008, our offices in British Columbia and Alberta have maintained a Certificate of Recognition from Enform — the safety association for Canada’s upstream oil and gas industry — which verifies that our practices align with industry standards.
