Anatomy of a Reel
Types of Reels
A reel is a device that winds up and stores hose or cable. In a broad sense, there are three kinds of reels:
- Live Hose Reel: Stores hose and allows fluid to pass through hose and reel without taking all of the hose off the reel first. This is accomplished through the use of a swivel joint .
- Live Cable Reel: Stores cable and allows current to pass through the cable without taking all of the cable off the reel first. This is accomplished through the use of a collector ring assembly).
- Storage Reel: Stores either hose or cable, but does NOT allow current or fluid to flow while the hose or cable is still on the reel. Instead, everything must be taken off the spool of the reel. Then a connection is made to the hose or cable. (Because these reels only store the hose or cable, they have fewer components and tend to be less expensive.)
We also offer combination reels that can handle both fluids and electrical cable on the same reel. Reels can be rewound by a variety of methods: crank, spring-power, or motor (electric, air, or hydraulic).
