In 1977, Epic Energy President, Richard Knappe read a book on passive solar energy. This sparked a lifelong passion for the pursuit of the efficient use of alternative energy. Richard designed and then built a scale model of a home based on the principles he learned from this book in order to personally test the theories. To his delight, everything worked exactly as the book had suggested. A few years later, Richard and his wife decided to build that exact home. Once the windows and insulation were in, it was obvious the home would take very little to heat, even in Atlantic Canadian winters! Richard expected 1000’s of people to take advantage of this free energy, but, was surprised to know that very few did. When Richard started his construction company in 1993, he urged home owners and builders to consider solar energy because he knew first hand of the benefits. Over the years other sources were tested and integrated into his home and he became known locally for his passion for renewable energy. As energy costs increased, people have become more interested in harnessing renewable sources for their needs. Epic Energy exists to help people and businesses in our communities, harness and enjoy, the full benefits of the Sun, Wind, and of Water. Epic Energy uses the newest proven equipment available, we are not tied to any particular brands. We have experience in design and installation for many types of systems and can accommodate your needs. When Epic Energy designs a system for your needs, we also set up monitoring systems, as an option, so that you can check your home power status wherever you are globally. Finally, we also supply automatic generator start-ups.
Alternative Energy
There are many reasons why a person should choose renewable energy today. There are several renewable source options available ranging from complete Off Grid systems, to integrated systems including “Net Metering” which is a partnership between you and your local Power Commission. Compared to traditional energy sources (The Grid) the cost of the initial renewable source set up is a smart investment; also, savings are exponential as traditional energy costs continue to increase. Plus, using natural resources to supply your power needs can help lower your environmental footprint because your consumption is far less than those using traditional sources.
Monitoring Systems
Here are a few things to keep in mind when thinking about installing a system in your home or business. Epic Energy uses the newest proven equipment available; we are not tied to any particular brand. This means we can choose the very best system for your needs without the need to push a particular product. We have experience in the design AND installation for many different types of systems accommodating many different needs. We can set up a monitoring system that will allow you to check your home power status wherever you are on the globe! This is an option provided to you when you have a system designed by Epic Energy.
Integrated Systems
There are several options available to you for the monitoring of your renewable energy sources in your home. We recommend an integrated system for optimal output. This type of system includes a 3 phase rectifier for turbine, and an inverter for the turbine to change the power to 240 volt pure sine wave so it can send the power to the grid. Also included are grid tie inverters. These inverters take the DC power from solar panels and convert it to pure sine wave 240, also to be fed to the grid. We also recommend an off grid inverter. This is normally off, but when the power goes out it is configured to act as the grid. When the power goes down the grid tied inverters all shut down (by law). They have an activator that only connects if there is power coming from the grid. The generator will also start automatically if there is a power shortage. So the batteries here generate 48 volt dc current when the off grid inverter is switched on, or switched to the break out panel. The inverter can be on at all times if you wish but the mechanical switch has to be activated manually by law. Once it is connected to the battery bank it starts to invert 240 volt pure sine wave power. The other inverters recognize the stable power supply and interprets it as the grid, so they connect and start producing power again from the solar panels or the wind turbine, so you then have full power to run the home. Sometimes the power produced is more than the power required by the home and if the power lines are down there is nowhere for the power to go. Normally, in this case, the inverters would shut down, but then there would be no power for the home again. To avoid this we build in a diversion load. This is triggered by the off grid inverter. It senses that the batteries are full, the home is supplied, and there is still power pushing in. It then triggers a relay to switch on the 10 kilowatts of 240 volt heaters. This quickly pulls down the power so the inverters can continue to produce power for any loads required. If a grid tie system is something you are looking for with the ability to run your home when the grid is down, we can build a system like this for you. Contact Epic Energy today!
