“Deerstone” is a term coined by anthropologists to describe both specific artifacts and ancient cultures from the Mongolian Steppes of northcentral Asia that carved images of deer into stones. Descendants of these and similar cultures still exist today, from Alaska and Canada to Asia and Africa, and still honor and depend on deer and their biological relatives, such as caribou, reindeer, moose, antelope, and other animals.  Continued survival of the peoples and animals of the north and around the globe, including every one of us, are now threatened by climate change, inefficient use and inequitable distribution of resources, and a lack of connection and understanding across cultures.

PROJECTS INCLUDE

• Developing the largest wind-solar-battery-diesel microgrid project in Alaska, along with two similar hybrid systems in neighboring communities in the Northwest Arctic 
• Systems modeling for a 10 MW solar PV feasibility study for the island of Lombok, Indonesia
• Repairing a wind-diesel hybrid system in Bristol Bay, Alaska
• Providing detailed technical energy assistance for regional institutions supporting over 125 remote communities across rural Alaska
• Securing funding for a deep energy retrofit and installation of a woody biomass boiler for an Alaska Native Tribal Council building
• Conducting research and analysis and writing an Energy Landscape and Opportunities Analysis for the Municipality of Anchorage
• Contributing to a report detailing a national strategy for remote renewable energy development for the country of Indonesia
• Participating in a 13 community regional economic development and cultural resource protection initiative for indigenous communities in the lower Yukon River region of Alaska
• Performing MW-scale feasibility studies for grid-tied solar and solar-battery options for the Port of Anchorage
• Troubleshooting a village-scale wind-diesel-electric heating hybrid system
