Covanta Plymouth began commercial operation in February 1992 and serves communities and businesses in Eastern Pennsylvania with sustainable waste disposal. It provides an alternative to landfilling post-recycled waste that reduces greenhouse gases and generates energy. The facility processes approximately 1,216 tons per day of municipal solid waste and generates enough energy to power 25,000 homes. The facility is also a large recycler of metal, annually recovering enough to build more than 4,600 cars. The Covanta Plymouth facility is equipped with a water-cooled turbine-generator condenser that converts steam to water for continuous cycling of water through the boilers. It also features extensive pollution control systems, including flue gas scrubbers injecting lime, fabric filter baghouses, nitrogen oxide control, mercury control and a continuous emissions monitoring system. The facility is a recipient of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star award. Acceptance into the VPP Star program is official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees to achieve exemplary occupational safety and health policies, procedures and practice.
