About Company

Clearway Energy, Inc. (“Clearway”), (NYSE: CWEN and CWEN.A) and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh have entered into a 40-year energy services agreement following Duquesnes sale of its Tri Generation facility to Clearway. With this arrangement, Duquesne becomes the second recent university in the United States and the first in Pennsylvania to monetize energy assets via a Tri Generation facility, which allows users to convert excess steam that otherwise becomes waste into reliable energy for electricity, water heating, and cooling.

Thermal

Efficient energy solutions take many forms. Our thermal teams experience in delivering reliable, efficient solutions is both proven and wide-ranging. Some customers have been relying on systems that have been in place for more than 40 years. Theyve experienced firsthand the ability to design, develop, build and operate combined heat and power plants, district energy systems and fuel cell generation plants. Plus, the Clearway Energy family of companies has the technology agnostic mindset to put the best solution in place for each customers energy needs.

Combined Heat & Power and Fuel Cells

Combined heat and power - also known as CHP or co-generation - takes full advantage of what standard power plants often consider "waste" gas. CHP captures the heat in that flue gas and turns it into useful energy, converting it into steam, hot water or even chilled water that can then be distributed to nearby facilities.  Clearway Energy has a large network of CHP facilities operated by professional teams that are available 24 hours a day. The CHP process is naturally more efficient and almost 50% less fuel-intensive than traditional generation technologies, reducing electricity costs, minimizing the carbon footprint of the power plant and enabling real-time sales of excess power back to the electric grid (where applicable).  With Clearway Energy as a fully integrated partner, we can finance, build, own and operate a CHP facility - meaning you dont have to do all that yourself. That lets you focus on your core business.

Operational highlights of five of our CHP plants:

  • University of Bridgeport - provides thermal energy and electricity to the campus through a highly efficient fuel cell provided by FuelCell Energy
  • Arizona State University - provides heating, cooling and electricity to the universitys distribution system connecting 88 buildings on
  • ASUs Tempe campus and its research facilities
  • University Medical Center of Princeton - provides power, steam, chilled water and backup power to this new, state-of-the-art hospital campus
  • Dover, DE - provides steam to the local Kraft Foods and Procter & Gamble plants, as well as electricity for the Delmarva Peninsula and the mid-Atlantic regions market
  • Tucson, AZ - provides hot water, chilled water and electricity to a number of buildings in downtown Tucson, including the Tucson Convention Center and Midtown Police Station

Fuel Cells

We have teamed up with FuelCell Energy, Inc. to offer efficient, low emission, environmentally clean fuel cell energy power plants, which can provide base-load power and heat to your facility 24/7. Fuel cells offer a number of benefits over traditional power generation technologies, including the flexibility to create a plant that provides exactly what you need.  FuelCell energy plants generate reliable power 24/7 while producing almost zero pollution or particulate matter. They have a wide variety of applications for commercial and industrial facilities and can offer you economic as well as environmental advantages.  The electrical power output of the fuel cells is used to provide base-load power for your facilities. However, fuel cell technology works most efficiently when implemented as part of a combined heat and power (CHP) application, where the thermal energy from the fuel cell exhaust is recovered and used to heat or cool industrial facilities, district energy systems and commercial buildings. The CHP application can increase system efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and other emissions by decreasing boiler operations.
