About Company

Clean Fuels Ohio is a state-wide, non-profit organization dedicated to improving air quality and health, reducing environmental pollution, strengthening Ohios economy, and enhancing our nations energy security by promoting and encouraging the use of cleaner, domestic fuels and efficient vehicles. As a U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities coalition, Clean Fuels Ohio has remained the “go-to” resource for assistance with implementing alternative transportation solutions.     We have over a decade of extensive experience working with fleets and stakeholders to deploy cleaner, more efficient vehicles, advanced technologies, and nonpetroleum fuels and infrastructure throughout the state. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, we work extensively around the state in collaboration with local partners in the transportation industry, local and state government, and the general public.

Improving air quality, strengthening Ohios economy, and enhancing the nations energy security

Membership with Clean Fuels Ohio is our main way of engaging our stakeholders across the state. We are a member-supported organization that values the contributions of our members and partners. We offer great benefits for a wide variety of industry partners and companies, including increased visibility, workshops, access to events, and grant funding opportunities. Individuals may also support our mission by joining as members.

The Bottom Line

Electric Vehicles Ethanol Its Simply Smarter With great advances in technology and production capacity, you have many choices when it comes to alternative fuels. Currently, there are more than a dozen alternative fuels in production or being developed in the US and Europe. Find out more about some of the most popular and readily available alternative fuel types above.   Energy Security The United States imports nearly half of its petroleum; two-thirds of which is in the form of gasoline and diesel. The use of imported petroleum increases the risks of trade deficits, supply chain volatility, and susceptibility price changes.      The utilization of alternative fuels will positively influence the nations energy security by decreasing the nations dependence on foreign oil. Most alternative fuels can be produced and manufactured using current domestic industrial capacities. Utilizing these fuels offsets gasoline and diesel consumption, which reduces the nations dependence on foreign oil.

Natural Gas

  • CNG is produced by compressing natural gas to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. To provide adequate driving range, CNG is stored onboard a vehicle in a compressed gaseous state within cylinders at a pressure of 3,000 to 3,600 pounds per square inch.
  • Liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is natural gas in its liquid form. LNG is produced by purifying natural gas and super-cooling it to -260°F to turn it into a liquid. During the process known as liquefaction, natural gas is cooled below its boiling point, removing most of the compounds found in the fuel. The remaining natural gas is primarily methane with small amounts of other hydrocarbons.
  • Natural gas offers tremendous cost savings compared to petroleum fuels; around 30% - 70% reductions in fuel spending can be expected. Government incentives or financing may help offset higher initial costs for new vehicles or support converting existing vehicles CNG and LNG. The utilization of this fuel source also supports Ohios economy because of Ohios growing production of fossil and renewable natural gas.
  • Natural gas is a healthier alternative to conventional petroleum-based fuels because it produces significantly fewer tailpipe emissions. This is because methane (natural gas) burns much cleaner by emitting fewer hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter. Utilizing natural gas can cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 25% when compared to gasoline or diesel vehicle exhaust. Reducing these emissions is vital in decreasing environmental problems such as global warming, smog, and acid rain.

Propane

Propane, also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or autogas, is a domestically produced fossil fuel that can replace or supplement petroleum-based fuels. Propane is a three-carbon alkane gas (C3H8). It is stored under pressure inside a tank and is a colorless, odorless liquid. As pressure is released, the liquid propane vaporizes and turns into gas that is used in combustion. An odorant, ethyl mercaptan, is added for leak detection.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable option to petroleum-based diesel. Biodiesel carries lower emissions and increased energy security when compared to traditional diesel. Biodiesel is a liquid fuel often referred to as B100 or neat biodiesel in its pure, unblended form. Like petroleum diesel, biodiesel is used to fuel compression-ignition engines. See the table for biodiesels physical characteristics.
