History
In 1955, Yue-Kong (Y.K.) Pao bought his first vessel, a 27-year-old coal-burning freighter renamed the Golden Alpha. Twenty-five years later, the company house flag was flying on board nearly 200 vessels, the largest fleet ever assembled in private ownership. In 1978, Y.K. Pao was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, and in 2003 he was selected by readers of shipping magazine Fairplay as “the most influential person in shipping in 120 years”. Today, the BW Group remains a major player in the maritime industry, managing the worlds largest privately owned fleet of Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) and the second largest fleet of Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units.
BW LNG
BW has been involved in LNG shipping since the early 1970s. In the early 2000s, we expanded our LNG activities to take advantage of growth in LNG transportation, securing a number of longer term charters. Our most recent growth has been through the deliveries of two MEGI LNG carriers and our first Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) in 2015. Our current fleet comprises of 23 vessels, 19 vessels in operation and 4 newbuildings. Of the 23 vessels, 20 of them are LNG carriers whilst three of them are FSRUs. BW is focused on growing long-term relationships within the LNG industry and our vessels are under contracts with quality customers such as Egas, Engie, NLNG, Pavilion Gas, Sinopec, Repsol and Sonatrach.
Sustainability
BW believes in acting for the future and we aim to make a positive and lasting impact in the world. We always act responsibly and ethically in our own business. We focus on CSR initiatives that have lasting value, and we believe actions that also bring benefit to the company are the most sustainable. We are also committed to implementing processes and measures that will continually reduce our impact on the environment. We are working on multiple fronts to have our ships consume less energy. We collaborate with members of the industry on projects to explore best practices. We also actively support new technologies that support sustainability. BW is ISO 14001 certified and we follow an environmental plan to ensure that we systematically work to reduce our environmental footprint. Our most important contribution is our holistic and company-wide initiative to reduce bunker consumption and thereby our emissions.
