About Company

Family -Owned  company  dedicated  to  the  Exploration and  Development  of  domestic  Oil  and  Gas  resources. We are a fourth generation family-owned business thats proudly supported the countrys gas and oil interests for a century.  Founded in 1917 by Oklahoma geologist and oil man Frank Buttram, the Buttram Petroleum Company quickly found success pioneering the use of geology in oil field speculation.  Subsequent generations built on his tradition of innovation and diversification by expanding into other fields, including gas and minerals.  With interests in 16 states across the nation, Buttram Energies, Inc. (BEI) is proud to carry on his legacy today.

Pioneers   of   the   Field

The story of BEI begins with its founder, Frank Buttram.  Raised on a struggling farm in what was then Chickasaw Nation, Frank had to work hard to meet his aspirations for a good education.  After starting a career in teaching he continued his education at the University of Oklahoma, ultimately getting his masters degree in geology in 1912.  During this time Frank worked for the Oklahoma Geological Survey and wrote several bulletins, one of which gained a lot of attention.  Called "The Cushing Oil and Gas Field," it predicted developments in the field so accurately that prospecting companies couldnt help but take notice, leading to a revolution in the use of geology to locate fields and identify structures.

After a time as Fortuna Oil Co.s chief geologist, Frank began his own enterprise, Buttram Petroleum Company.  The corporation became one of the nations largest oil operators and aided in the development of the Balcones Fault, Powell Field and East Texas Pool.  Over the next decades its success won him recognition as an industry authority and a leading Oklahoma City businessman.  Among his accomplishments, Frank was one of five founding members of the IPAA (Independent Petroleum Association of America) of which he later served as chairman from 1939 to 1943.  He also served at the pleasure of President Franklin Roosevelt on the Petroleum War Council during WWII.  Franks banking interests led him to serve as chairman of the Oklahoma City branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, and his cattle ventures were instrumental in developing the new Brangus breed.  For his many contributions, both civic and professional over a long and esteemed career, Frank was honored with induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

Buttram   Energies   Today

When Frank retired in 1964, Buttram Energies remained in family hands.  Franks sons, Myron and Dorsey, and grandsons, Randy and Preston, have each taken the helm and carried on the companys legacy.  Although each generation has focused primarily on oil and gas, over the years BEI has also been involved in mining, cattle ranching, citrus and sugarcane farming, banking, landman services and real estate.  Today BEI is led by Kim Buttram and Kristen Beery, the fourth generation of Buttram leadership.  We are proud to build on the powerful legacy of a pioneering business in the energy industry, and look forward to carrying it on for the next generation.
