Basin Electric is one of the largest electric generation and transmission cooperatives in the United States. We were created to provide reliable low-cost power for our members, and today serve 141 member cooperative systems in nine states from the Canadian border to the border of Mexico. We have a diverse energy portfolio that includes coal, gas, oil, nuclear, distributed, and renewable energy, including co-op-owned wind resources. We are also the parent company of eight subsidiaries – the largest being for-profit Dakota Gasification Company, which owns and operates the Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah, ND. The Synfuels Plant currently produces 13 products, among them carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is sent to Canada for tertiary oil recovery. In fact, the process is part of the largest carbon sequestration project in the world.
