AUT was established in 1976 in Tracy, Quebec, as Atelier d’Usinage Tracy.Founder Angel Vazquez, who still serves as president, immigrated from Spain to Canada in 1967. He spent several years as a machinist for various companies in the Sorel-Tracy area. While major industries like shipbuilding, paper mills, metallurgy, and chemical operations were thriving in the region at the time, subcontracting support was in scarce supply. Recognizing an opportunity, Angel Vazquez launches Atelier d’Usinage Tracy.
During the 1970s AUT acquires a reputation among the metallurgical community in the region. In the 80’s the company diversifies its market base to manufacture turbine and generator components for the hydro power industry and tooling, ground equipment, test benches, fixtures and templates for the aerospace industry. After moving once and expanding twice, AUT moves reputed company and well known for its highly skilled machinists.
AUT quickly becomes recognized and envied for its highly slkilled machinists. Through its apprentice training program AUT forms hundreds of machinists. Some will join the company while others will go on to work for other or even start their own businesses.
As the 1980s come to an end AUT acquires its first cnc horizontal boring mill. A major investment during its second expansion increased AUT’s Handling capacity to 10 tons. The outcome of this investment is dramatic. AUT must quickly purchase another land and building in Tracy, just across the river for metal fabrication. With nearly 50 employees it is full speed ahead.
During the course of the 80’s and 90’s AUT is named “company of the year” on numerous occasions. By 1995, it was time to expand again. Squeezed for space, AUT acquires a 240,000 sq ft piece of land and building, from Marine Industries shipyard, bringing all company activities under one roof.
In 1996 Angel Vazquez Jr. came on board after completing his degree in engineering.Company horizons expanded again that year as AUT pioneers into machining of thin wall and monolithic structures for spacecraft applications. It successfully machines structures as large as 96 in. by 144 in. and as thin as .012 in.!
In the late 1990s, AUT began to export to the U.S and obtains its first major contracts to refurbish large OEM equipment for the steel and polyethylene industries. The late 90’s were a key era for R & D. AUT invested over $1 million to design and manufacture a self-propelled rock crusher REFCON (www.refcon.ca) used to rehabilitate the roads.
The economic climate slowed significantly with the advent of the 2000s. But AUT, having diversified, was able to stay focused on its game. Economic conditions didn’t stop the company from taking on new challenges like AUT Industries, established to create a presence in the U.S., a decision that customers in the States welcomed.
The year 2007 marked the dawn of a new era as Angel Vazquez turned the reins of the company over to his son. An engineer by training, with many years of machining and management experience, Angel Vazquez Jr. set his sights on taking the company into new markets, notably mining and defense.
Today AUT remains a financially solid company with myriad goals. Its customers include major companies in the energy, aerospace, mining, and defense industries. At the end of 2010, AUT expands once again with a $3.0 million investment to build a new plant for large-scale fabrication, machining and assembly with 50 Tons lifting capacity. AUT will remain a center of excellence and continue to offer added value for decades to come.

What we do
Our strengths are:
Precision machining
We have a large variety of modern machine-tools to machine small and large scale parts in different materials such as alloy steel, nickel- and chrome-based steel, titanium, aluminum, Inconel™, and more.
Fabrication and welding
AUT specializes in both fabrication and welding of complex mechanically welded assemblies, using certified procedures (such as SAW, SMAW, FCAW, GTAW and GMAW).
We also have extensive hardfacing and overlay experience.
Assembly and integration
AUT’s mechanical assembly expertise is a major “added value”. We haven’t just refined our skills in this area—we can also handle complete integration of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and control systems. In fact, we have dedicated workspaces just for assembly and integration with up to 60 Tons lifting capacty.
Manufacturing engineering
We’ll work closely with you—from project design through manufacturing—to ensure design–fabrication synergy and avoid cost overruns or schedule delays.
Rehabilitation and refurbishment
We have been in the rehab business since the beginning. Therefore we understand what downtime means. Rehabilitation and refurbishment require know-how and ingenuity. We don’t just rehab your parts – we try to improve them and increase reliability.
