Apex Clean Energy is an independent renewable energy company focused on building utility-scale generation facilities. We create value throughout the asset life cycle, from site origination and financing, to turn-key construction and long-term asset management. Our business plan is based on the premise that clean energy resources are valuable. Like conventional energy companies, we secure rights to these resources and invest to commercialize them.
Apex is building one of the nation’s largest, most-diversified portfolios of renewable energy resources, capable of producing over 10,000 MW of clean energy. Apex has a strong track record of success. In Spring 2014, Apex announced the sale of the 100 MW Hoopeston Wind energy project to IKEA. Located in Illinois, this facility is scheduled to enter commercial operations in early 2015. Apex is managing construction and will serve as asset manager during the operating life of the project. In December 2012, Apex completed construction of the 300 MW Canadian Hills Wind project in Oklahoma. Earlier that year, commercial operation of Apex’s solar facilities in Colorado commenced.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
These are exciting times in the energy industry. We see a convergence of trends in society that are driving the transition to a world powered by clean electricity. Wind and solar energy have become large global industries whose products are scaling up now and changing the way power is generated and delivered. They are compelling sources of energy that have been enabled by technology. They produce no carbon emissions, they consume no water, and they are now cost competitive. Renewable energy resources are making an important contribution to meeting the needs of our energy-driven lifestyles.
We see a bright future for electricity. During the coming decades, electricity will become the dominant energy source powering our lives. Consider the transportation sector; the transition to electric-powered cars is already underway. Most major car manufacturers have plug-in or fully electric cars on the market. Why? The answer is simple: the economics are compelling, because people save money with electric cars. Electricity is four times cheaper than gasoline, and electric vehicles cost less to maintain.
In addition to being cheaper than liquid fuels, electricity offers significant environmental benefits when compared to gasoline or diesel fuels. Over time, electricity is getting cleaner as we add more solar and wind energy into the generation fleet. In contrast, oil is getting more difficult and more expensive to extract, located in oil sands or far offshore in deep water.
Electricity will play an increasingly important role in our energy future as electric cars become mainstream. We believe this presents opportunities for companies like Apex, whose energy resources are clean, cost competitive, and can scale to meet rising demand.
HISTORY
In 2009, a team of successful energy executives set out to build a new kind of energy company. Drawing from their experience with several of the nation’s leading renewable energy companies, Apex’s founders began to assemble a team of wind and solar energy professionals, creating a company with the capacity to excel in every phase of project realization, from origination to asset management, financing to construction. Today, the Apex team comprises over 90 talented and experienced professionals, positioning Apex to deliver clean, domestically-produced energy to homes and businesses across North America.
Apex has been built with a singular focus, to speed the shift to clean electricity. It is a mission we’ve been pursuing for over a decade. In 2000, prior to founding Apex, the company’s leadership team created Greenlight Energy, Inc. This independent wind energy company would be responsible for developing $750 million of facilities now in commercial operations, with a combined generating capacity of 450 MW. In 2006, Greenlight Energy, Inc. was acquired by BP Alternative Energy. Following that sale, the leadership team got together again to reinvest in the clean energy industry through a new venture, Greenlight Energy Resources.
In 2006, Greenlight Energy Resources founded Columbia Power Technologies, a leader in direct-drive wave energy systems. Columbia Power is commercializing a patented, next-generation solution that delivers survivability with a competitive cost of energy and a low environmental and stakeholder impact.
In 2007, Greenlight Energy Resources launched Axio Power, a successful developer of utility-scale solar PV facilities in the U.S. and Canada. Over the next four years, the company completed three acquisitions and assembled a large portfolio of projects in the US and Canada. By 2011, the company had secured power sales contracts for over 100 MWs of solar capacity. These projects were subsequently financed and built by SunEdison, who acquired Axio Power in late 2011.
