About Company

A. G. Lee Oil Company was originally started in 1948 in Kenly, North Carolina by Albert G. Lee, Sr., as a supplier of home heating oil and gasoline products for farming. In 1964, Albert G. Lee, Jr. acquired the business, incorporated it and appropriately changed the name to A.G. Lee Oil Company, Inc.   In 1965, the company moved its operation to Smithfield, NC and within a year, purchased its first oil tanker transport truck, having acquired the rights to supply the Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) brand of gasoline products to customers. In 1967, the company purchased its first service station and a second station was acquired in 1969. In 1978, the company purchased a truck stop, known as AGs Truck Stop, on I-95 in Smithfield. The companys operations were moved at that time to the AGs Truck Stop location. At that time, a division was formed known as AGs Restaurant, Inc. which was the restaurant inside the truck stop.   In 1980, the Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) brand was dropped and the rights to sell the Phillips 66 brand were acquired. In 1982, the home heating division was sold and the two service stations were converted to convenience stores. A company strategy was developed to expand through acquisitions and further development of convenience stores. In 1983, AGs Truck Stop was leased and the companys operations center was moved back to its original site in Smithfield. In 1984, the company gained the right to sell the Texaco (Star Enterprises) and Shell brands of petroleum products. By 1985, the company included five convenience stores, one truck stop and a petroleum products distributorship division.   In 1995, A.G. Lee Oil Company, Inc. included over 110 employees, 16 convenience stores located throughout eastern North Carolina, and a petroleum products distribution division. In that same year, the company received the rights to sell Citgo brand petroleum products. The companys business strategy still involved one of growth through selected acquisition and development of convenience store sites, and an increasing base of petroleum products distributorship customers. By 1996, the company employed over 150 people and operated 14 convenience stores. In addition, the company also owned and operated one Hardees franchised store and two Tastee Freez franchised stores.   In October 1998, Mr. Lee decided to sell 16 of its 18 convenience stores to The Pantry, Inc. A spin off company named Pep Mart, Inc. was developed to manage the two remaining c-stores along with the franchised stores. Between 1998 and 2006, several changes were made including the ending of sales of Texaco and Phillips 66 brands of petroleum products and the ramping up of Shell products.   Today, A.G. Lee Oil Company, Inc. owns and operates a Shell branded convenience in Clinton, NC as well as maintaining its petroleum products distributorship division. The office was moved in September 2006 to a new building located in Selma, NC. In 2007, signed on as a distributor for ValvTect Premium Fuel Additives. The company continues to maintain its branding relationships with Shell and Citgo and it also offers unbranded fuels, including Colonial, Murphy and Valero.   A.G. Lee Oil Company, Inc. is also positioning itself to continue expanding well into the future through its petroleum products distributorship as well as its transport operations, while maintaining its current rental properties.
