SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Ukraine launched multiple drone attacks across three areas of Russia including the Ryazan region, home to one of the country’s largest oil refineries.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said a total of 15 unmanned aircraft were shot down overnight in the regions of Kursk and Belgorod, near the Ukrainian border, as well as Ryazan in central Russia.
Kyiv’s forces targeted the facilities of the Ryazan refinery, which is involved in supplying fuel to the Russian Army, according to the nation’s General Staff. “Explosions and a fire were recorded in the target area,” it said in a Facebook post.
It was the second time the facility was attacked in three days. A fire broke out on Friday at the plant, owned by Rosneft PJSC, after a drone attack. The earlier blaze damaged a so-called hydrotreater used to make diesel and jet fuel, according to a Ukrainian official familiar with the operation.
Russian authorities didn’t confirm the attack on the refinery. Ryazan region Governor Pavel Malkov said that the authorities are assessing material damage after the overnight drone attack on the region. There were no reports of casualties, according to preliminary information, Malkov said.
Rosneft didn’t respond immediately to a request for comment outside of office hours on Sunday.
The Ryazan facility, with crude-processing capacity of 340,000 barrels, a day is linked to Russia’s diesel export pipeline and also supplies motor fuel to consumers in much of central Russia, including Moscow.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a separate statement that its army attacked energy facilities supporting actions of Ukraine’s Armed Forces as well as the infrastructure of military airfields and storage depots for drones.
