Turkiye to Boost Natural Gas Storage Capacity by 2028

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The proposed capacity expansions at two key facilities is likely to deliver significant boost to Turkiye’s natural gas storage capacity by end-2028. The country expects the total storage capacity to touch 12 billion cubic metres by this time frame, said Alparslan Bayraktar, Energy Minister.

According to the Minister, the plan is to increase the capacity at the Lake Tuz storage facility initially to 3.5 billion cubic meters and later on to 5.4 billion cubic meters by 2028. It must be noted that the current capacity of the facility is only 1.2 billion cubic metres. Also, the storage capacity at the Silivri facility will be increased from 4.6 billion cubic meters to 6 billion over the same period, he noted.

The increase in storage capacity to 12 billion cubic metres will help Turkey store almost one-fifth of its total natural gas consumption. Turkiye is estimated to consume approximately 50 billion cubic metres of natural gas per annum, thus making it the fourth largest gas consumer in the European region.

The daily natural gas production from the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea is expected to surge to 10 million cubic meters by the first quarter next year. Also, the daily gas supply of the Silivri and Lake Tuz facilities is expected to rise to 80 million cubic meters each by end-2024, Bayraktar said.
