SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Company (BOTAS) and Bulgarian Bulgargaz announced first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Turkiye to Bulgaria, under the thirteen-year agreement recently signed between the two parties.
The first delivery took place from Marmara Ereglisi LNG Terminal in Turkey, whose volume is estimated at around 55 million cubic metres (mcm). The partnership anticipates a total annual delivery of 1.5 billion cubic metres (bcm).
Rossen Hristov, Bulgaria’s Energy Minister, who was present during the launch ceremony at the terminal in northwestern Tekirdag province, noted that the first shipment marks an important day in the country’s history. The LNG will be regasified, stored, and delivered in partnership with BOTAS, he said. Furthermore, he added that the partnership will ensure energy security, not only for Bulgaria, but also for the entire southeastern and central European region.
Meantime, Burhan Ozcan, General Manager, BOTAS said that the shipment marks the first step in ensuring energy supply security for Turkey, Bulgaria and Europe.
Both Turkiye and Bulgaria are reportedly exploring other opportunities in gas and energy projects. An agreement that will bring rapid expansion of infrastructure in Turkiye, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia is all set to be signed soon.
