Turkey Considers Building New Oil Pipeline to Syria

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): In a statement released yesterday, Alparslan Bayraktar, the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, stated that the nation is thinking about constructing a new oil pipeline to Syria. The proposed new pipeline will also connect to the existing pipeline between Turkey and Iraq, he added.

The action, according to local media, is part of the Turkish administration's efforts to build ties with the new Syrian interim government, which was established earlier this month after the Baathist party ended decades of rule and the country's ongoing political unrest. Turkey plans to play a major role in aiding Syria's reconstruction by making use of its abundant natural resources, particularly its oil and gas reserves.

The Turkish minister pointed out that Syria's natural resources may generate a healthy income for the nation, thereby boosting its struggling economy. Syria's oil production has now fallen to 30,000 barrels per day, he said. He pointed out that in the early 2000s, the nation was producing about 600,000 barrels of oil every day.

To forge close ties with the nation's new leadership, Turkey has already reopened its embassy in Damascus. According to the minister, he will soon be leading a Turkish delegation to Syria.
