SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Mr. Mele Kyari, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), urged support of the country’s judiciary system in helping it tackle the key challenges posed by crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism. Only with active support of the judiciary can the Nigerian oil and gas industry achieve its full potential.
The NNPC Chief made the statement during the recently held workshop on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, organised by the National Judicial Institute and INVESTIN 234 in the capital city of Abuja. The statement observed that the rising incidents of crude oil thefts and pipeline vandalisms have undermined the true gains of the PIA.
According to Kyari, the judiciary must take necessary actions towards creation of a special court in order to facilitate trials of offences connected with crude oil theft and vandalism. A dedicated court would also result in accelerated hearings on such cases. The timely and appropriate punishment to culprits could deter other from indulging in such acts. The judiciary has been playing a very crucial role in helping NNPCL enforce various security arrangements, he added.
Kyari reiterated NNPCL’s commitment to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure best utilisation of the country’s natural resources.
