Moldova Announced Emergency Measures Following Halt in Gazprom Gas Supplies

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The Russian gas company Gazprom's decision to stop supplying gas to Moldova on January 1, 2025, was denounced by Moldova. To address the crisis, the nation's government declared a number of emergency measures.

Gazprom stated that Moldova owes it approximately $709 million for gas shipments in the past when it announced its decision to stop gas supply. The Moldovan government, however, denied the accusations, claiming that an international audit had already verified that the true debt was less than $10 million.

The Kuciurgan power plant, which provides electricity to all of Moldova, is probably going to stop operations as a result of the decision. People in the Transnistrian region will be left without heating and power during the winter months as a result.

In an effort to challenge the Russian gas major's unilateral decision, the Moldovan government is looking into all available legal avenues, including international arbitration. It intends to pursue damages for the decision's significant economic harm and national security risks. The administration has already proclaimed a state of emergency in the nation's energy sector.

Additionally, starting on January 1, 2025, the regulatory authority has authorized a number of initiatives to lower electricity consumption. It has also been mandated to prioritize biofuels and other alternative energy sources.
