Fire at Chevron El Segundo Oil Refinery Extinguished

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The fire crews responded to a blaze inside Chevron’s El Segundo refinery in in the 300 block of El Segundo Boulevard, the city of El Segundo, California Tuesday. The isolated fire has been completely extinguished, with no injuries or emissions exceedances reported.

The El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Los Angeles County fire departments attended to the fire, reported at around 6:15 p.m. The fire, which set ablaze a particular section of the refinery, was contained within three hours of operation, by around 8:35 p.m. However, the authorities declined to provide a clarification on which refinery units were impacted.

In an email response, the company noted that no major processing units were involved in the fire. Also, the fire did not have any impact on the refinery’s ability to supply petroleum products to its customers in the region.

Deena Lee, El Segundo Fire Chief noted that it has not been confirmed whether the material involved in the fire was jet fuel or diesel.

Built in 1911, the El Segundo refinery is now the supplier of nearly 20% of all motor vehicle fuels and 40% of the jet fuel consumption in southern California region. It processes over 276,000 barrels of crude oil per day and is the largest producing oil refinery on the west coast.
