Enbridge Cancelled Plans to Build Natural Gas Pipeline in Northern B.C.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Enbridge, Inc. announced Monday that it has chosen to cancel plans for a natural gas pipeline project in northern British Columbia. The project was previously considered a potential supply route for LNG export terminals at Prince Rupert.

The Canadian pipeline company has announced that it would no longer develop the Westcoast Connector Gas Transmission (WCGT) project. The project's environmental certificate had expired at the end of November this year.

WCGT could have transported 4.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day over 850 kilometers via two pipelines from northeastern British Columbia to the Prince Rupert area, fuelling the projected Shell LNG export facility. Although Shell withdrew from the project in 2017, B.C.-based Ksi Lisims LNG proposed another export facility in the region but later opted to purchase TC Energy Corp's Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) project. This left Enbridge without an LNG export facility to collaborate with.

Meanwhile, Enbridge will continue to expand the BC Pipeline system. The multibillion-dollar expansion of its T-North and T-South systems is underway. Enbridge will continue to play a leading role in providing safe, reliable, and affordable energy, according to CEO Greg Ebel.
