SEATTLE (Oil Monster): A significant milestone has been reached in the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline Project (EACOP).
Asaidi Mrutu, Coordinator of Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), recently announced that the project is 47.1% complete and will soon be operational, allowing oil from Uganda's Lake Albert oilfields to be transported to Tanzania's port of Tanga for sale in global markets.
Local communities have benefited from the project in a number of ways, including the creation of jobs, infrastructure, and economic prospects. Ten thousand or so persons have been compensated. Along with guaranteeing greater access to power, EACOP has also improved the water supply in communities and schools.
Due to several financial and regulatory obstacles, the project has experienced hitherto unheard-of implementation delays. After major investors abandoned the project midway, China is now funding it. Tanzania, Uganda, TotalEnergies, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) are implementing it as a joint venture.
The successful completion of the EACOP pipeline is expected to significantly improve regional energy cooperation while also promoting Tanzania's and Uganda's economic growth and development.
