TransAlta Corporation 12th Avenue SW , PO Box 1900,Station M, Calgary, Canada
Since Oct, 2021
TransAlta began operations in the United States in 2000 with the purchase of our Centralia plant in Washington State. Since then, we have expanded our generation to Wyoming, Minnesota, Massachusetts and coming in 2019, Pennsylvania. We have five U.S. facilities that have the capacity to produce more than 1,500 MW of reliable energy from sources including coal, hydro, solar and wind.
Collaboration
The signing of the TransAlta Energy Transition Bill in early 2011 represents significant collaboration among policymakers, environmentalists, labor leaders and TransAlta around the common goal of reducing emissions from energy production without unduly disrupting the local economy. Through all sides listening to each other’s concerns and setting realistic expectations, an agreement was established that provides opportunities for the company to plan long-term growth across the Pacific Northwest. The bill provides for the orderly transition of the Centralia plant from coal in 2020 and 2025 and allows TransAlta to grow and maintain a presence in the power market while protecting jobs and the community through the $55 million we have set aside to assist with the transition. We are uniquely suited to fill the need for replacement generation with plans to convert the Centralia facility to natural gas. TransAlta committed to invest $55 million into the local community and the state of Washington to support energy efficiency, economic and community development and education and retraining initiatives. We seek to invest in communities where we can have meaningful impact and enhance the quality of life where our employees work and live. TransAlta USA has invested more than $10 million in our communities, including:
- 4 million to United Way over the past 10 years;
- Over $900,000 to local education, seniors, sport and youth programs;
- Over $800,000 to program development, scholarships and a new college common building through our partnership with Centralia College;
- 1,000 acres and $310,000 to develop an Industrial Park located within Centralia Mine’s boundaries for new economic growth; and
- Our employee-based committee, TACT or “TransAlta Community Transformers” provides funding and volunteer labor each year.
