History

In 1937, my grandfather, Lawrence M. Callahan, started a business with his friend, Vachel A. Downes Sr. That business combined appliance and Victrola record player sales. After a year, they split the operation into separate music and appliance companies. My grandfather ran the appliance business and added propane gas services, creating the foundation of current-day Callahan’s Gas & Appliance. Since becoming its own business, Callahan’s has sold lighting, radios, furniture, mattresses, and beyond — but we have never lost our commitment to our Centreville clients and neighbors.   My grandfather’s hard work paid off and, in 1954, he was able to pass the Callahan’s Gas & Appliance torch to my father, Lawrence Callahan, who grew the business until I took it over in 1999. I am proud and excited to continue our company’s unique small-town business approach, emphasizing honesty, accountability, communication, and education. Ultimately, we believe that everything we do should add value to our community and that foundational conviction has made us one of Centreville’s most trusted businesses. We’re excited to continue to up our game in the coming decades, maintaining our high standards and passion for serving those around us.
