About Company

Indianola’s publicly owned utility has served the community for over a century, beginning with electric service in 1890.  Municipal utilities have many distinct characteristics that benefit the community they serve.  A five-member Board of Trustees, appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council, oversee the operations of IMU.  Local representation and control is key to providing the citizens a voice in terms of community needs, policies, and decision-making.   There have been many changes over the years in the way of industry standards, technology, and equipment, but IMU has remained your hometown utility company.  Our mission is to provide our citizens with reliable and affordable services while providing high-quality customer service and experiences.  We are your neighbors and we are here to serve you.

Electric

IMU serves the electric requirements of the citizens and businesses of Indianola located within its established territorial boundaries. IMU currently maintains approximately 6,300 electric meters.  Wholesale electricity is purchased from Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN) which is under a 30-year contract. Three 69kv transmission lines tie into IMU’s substations which distribute power out at 13.2kv. Available secondary voltages include 120/240 volts single phase and 120/208 or 277/480 volt three phase.  IMU also has 40MW of local generation that can be used in emergency situations or to assist with excessive loading on the electric system.

IMU: A Reliable Public Power Provider

Indianola Municipal Utilities is proud to have earned Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) recognition from the American Public Power Association (APPA).  The RP3 designation is earned by public power utilities that exemplify the highest standards of utility operations and that are leading the way in providing reliable and safe electric service to their communities.   To earn RP3 designation, utilities must demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, training and system improvement.  Criteria within each category are based on sound business practices and represent an industry-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity.  Indianola Municipal Utilities has achieved a Platinum designation level, which means that we have met 90 percent of the criteria for providing consumers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service.   The staff and board of trustees of Indianola Municipal Utilities take great pride in achieving Reliable Public Power Provider recognition.  Less than 5% of the nation’s 2,000 public utilities receive this recognition and it is a testament to the level of service provided to our customers as well as IMU’s commitment to our employees and the Indianola community.
