About Company

ALLETE Clean Energy, based in Duluth, Minnesota, is an independent power producer and supplier that acquires or develops capital projects to create energy solutions for North America’s sustainable energy future. With our operational and entrepreneurial experience, we’re open to all types of business relationships. An ALLETE company (NYSE:ALE), ALLETE Clean Energy owns and operates wind farms in four states with a total capacity of more than 500 megawatts and has additional projects underway that will increase our footprint to six states and more than 720 megawatts over the next year.  As ALLETE Clean Energy continues to grow, we’re often in need of skilled, qualified people to join our team and help us meet our goals. With facilities in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Minnesota and Oregon, and two more to be developed in North Dakota and Montana in 2019, we offer a wide variety of locations for prospective employees. ALLETE Clean Energy also earned designations as a Yellow Ribbon Company and as a 2019 Military Friendly Employer, underscoring our commitment to hire and support veterans and active-duty military members.

ALLETE Clean Energy Wind Investments

ALLETE Clean Energy is now developing the approximately 300-megawatt Diamond Spring wind site in Oklahoma, where it will enter the commercial and industrial power market by selling power to Walmart, Starbucks and Smithfield Foods; and the 106-megawatt Glen Ullin Energy Center wind farm in North Dakota and the 80-megawatt South Peak wind farm in Montana to sell power to utility customers under long-term power sale agreements. Glen Ullin and South Peak are expected to be completed in 2019, with Diamond Spring scheduled to be completed in 2020. ALLETE Clean Energy also developed a 48-megawatt expansion of the Thunder Spirit wind farm in North Dakota that was sold to Montana-Dakota Utilities upon completion in late 2018. Montana-Dakota Utilities purchased the 107.5-megawatt first phase of Thunder Spirit in 2015. Much of this latest round of wind energy development was supported by ALLETE Clean Energy’s $135 million investment in wind turbines that qualify for Federal Renewable Energy Production Tax Credits. The investment allows ALLETE Clean Energy to aggressively pursue its three-pronged growth strategy that includes building and operating new wind farms based on long-term power purchase agreements, building wind farms for other companies for a development fee or a sale price, and refurbishing its existing wind farms while extending power sales agreements.

ALLETE Clean Energy also has acquired six wind farms in Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon and Pennsylvania since 2011:

  • 98-megawatt Chanarambie-Viking wind farm in southwest Minnesota.
  • 104-megawatt Lake Benton wind farm, about 20 miles from the Chanarambie-Viking facility in southwest Minnesota.
  • 101-megawatt Armenia Mountain wind farm in north-central Pennsylvania.
  • 108-megawatt Storm Lake 1 and 78-megawatt Storm Lake 2 wind farms in Storm Lake, Iowa.
  • 50-megawatt wind farm in Condon, Ore.

ALLETE Energy Corridor

A comprehensive pathway for moving the rich and varied energy resources of North Dakota is the idea behind the ALLETE Energy Corridor. ALLETE Clean Energy is moving forward with plans to develop the concept which would provide for the movement of natural gas, petroleum products, water and wastewater, wind energy and future sequestered carbon.  The backbone of the energy corridor is an existing 465-mile path that contains a direct current transmission line running between Center, North Dakota, and Duluth, Minnesota. The energy corridor may parallel adjacent rights of way along this existing path, as well as adding about 60 miles of corridor west to the Bakken shale oil fields. Various segments of the corridor could be used for different purposes. An early focus for the corridor is to capture, transport and market the natural gas now being flared at hundreds of shale oil wells across North Dakota.
