Our History
D’ADDARIO INDUSTRIES, parent company of HI-HO PETROLEUM The D’Addario Construction Company was first established in 1927 and soon earned a legendary reputation in the Bridgeport area for road building.
By the 1950s, the company became known as “Hi-Ho D’Addario,” and had completed sections of Fairfield County’s Merritt Parkway and the Connecticut Thruway (I-95). In fact, if you’ve ever driven over I-95 you’ve passed through a part of Hi-Ho’s history!
In the 1960s, Hi-Ho D’Addario invested in many real estate and hotel transactions, as well as the area’s only major TV and radio transmission tower.
Further diversifying in the 1970s, Hi-Ho D’Addario acquired TV and radio stations across the eastern seaboard and as far west as Wyoming. It also expanded locally by acquiring several small oil companies and consolidating them under one name: Hi-Ho Petroleum. Ownership also tried to buy the New York Jets Football franchise, which resulted in the Bridgeport-based Hi-Ho Jets, to the delight of local fans.
By the 80’s, D’Addario launched Air Hi-Ho, which ran Bridgewater commuter flights to Chicago, Boston, and Washington, D.C. It also acquired, among other things, Bridgeport’s regional shopping mall, the Bridgeport Brass complex, a majority interest in Milford Jai Alai, and the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Upon being granted the first individual casino license in that state’s history, the property was renamed the Claridge Hotel & Hi-Ho Casino. Near the end of the decade, D’Addario Industries renovated the old Read’s building on 999 Broad Street in downtown Bridgeport to house the headquarters of Mechanics and Farmers Bank and Currency, and is now home to Chase Bank and the City Hall Annex.
In the 1990’s, D’Addario helped convert the Hi-Ho Mall into Housatonic Community College and the Sears Automotive Center into the Troop G State Police Barracks, with a state-of-the-art traffic monitoring system for the I-95 corridor. As 2000 approached, it also developed company-owned real estate into residential complexes in Darien, Woodbury and Newtown.
Today, the Hi-Ho D’Addario entrepreneurial spirit continues, now including asphalt plants in Danbury, a storage facility in Bridgeport, a sand and gravel facility in Newtown, a hotel and restaurant in Fairfield County, cell transmission towers, billboards throughout Fairfield County, licensed bulky waste landfills, a heavy construction equipment and materials hauling company, an aluminum company (the 3rd largest U.S. producer of aluminum can stock for the food and beverage industry), and various real estate holdings throughout Connecticut. It also owns technology companies with offices throughout the U.S., London and Australia. And of course, Hi-Ho Petroleum continues to service an impressive market share of commercial and home heating oil in lower Fairfield County and lower New Haven County. With its own fleet of trucks, 24 hour emergency service, and over 25 employees, Hi Ho is ready to take on your home comfort needs.
